From your post, I'm gathering you don't like the boat. I have talked to people irl who get a look of sheer terror on their faces when they talk about how they'll never do a cruise. That's cool-- some people hate spiders, some can't stand heights, and some people hate cruises.

I've actually never been on a cruise. I had one scheduled on Royal Caribbean about a year ago but I ended up having to cancel at the last minute (thank you trip insurance). It was a trip with all my high school friends and their wives, which is why I decided to go. I wasn't that upset at not being able to go. I heard that the boat was actually very nice.

My wife did a booze cruise with her work friends to Ensenada last year. She did not have kind things to say. She doesn't drink, so I think her impression of the boat was a little more accurate than those who stay buzzed the entire trip. But I am not comparing that trip to other cruises.

I am considering a Viking cruise in the Mediterranean.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

        • Every ten years or so a cruise fits the bill. My last cruise gave me some well-earned relaxation and reading time. I was able to SCUBA when I got to the ports. I'm probably due for another in a year or two.

          • Moderate Drinking Has No Health Benefits, Analysis of Decades of Research Finds

The review found that the risks of dying prematurely increase significantly for women once they drink 25 grams of alcohol a day, which is less than two standard cocktails containing 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits, two 12-ounce beers or two 5-ounce glasses of wine. The risks to men increase significantly at 45 grams of alcohol a day, or just over three drinks.

The new report, which analyzed more than 100 studies of almost five million adults, was not designed to develop drinking recommendations, but to correct for methodological problems that plagued many of the older observational studies. Those reports consistently found that moderate drinkers were less likely to die of all causes, including those not related to alcohol consumption.

Most of those studies were observational, meaning they could identify links or associations but they could be misleading and did not prove cause and effect. Scientists said that the older studies failed to recognize that light and moderate drinkers had myriad other healthy habits and advantages, and that the abstainers used as a comparison group often included former drinkers who had given up alcohol after developing health problems.

            Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

            • always a grain of salt to be taken with retrospective meta analyses of epidemiologic data. Sure the health benefits of moderate consumption have at times been overplayed. But still (from the article):

The new analysis shows, however, that those who drink moderately have no statistically significant advantage in longevity compared with those who are lifelong abstainers, the study’s authors said.
I will take comfort that my moderate alcohol consumption will likely not affect my longevity.

My dear old mother told me that what is really cool is staying away from demon alcohol. Are you calling my mother a liar?

I watched my uncle drink himself to death. As a nerd, I guess I just couldn't figure out how cool that is.

I haven’t heard the “if you don’t drink you are a nerd” argument since junior high and HS. Good times.

I’ll never begrudge anyone who decides to abstain. There will always be ~10% of society who have serious problems with alcohol. The rest of us still need to tread carefully with the demon drink.

Probably because you surround yourself with a bunch of similarly-minded nerds.

Sounds like you are going through a challenging time. That has to be frustrating. I hope you have someone to talk to and help you through what is bothering you.
