I am very happy that even church leadership has come to openly recognize this. I think it was GBH who encouraged us to associate with others and not be so full of ourselves. I have noticed more community cooperation and praise for others outside the church.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View Postnoticed that there are lots of good people outside of the church
It really hasn't always been such. Growing up in Utah, in the church, in a very religious family, association with non-members or inactives for that matter could be perilous to your testimony and faith.
Avoid the very appearance of evil went as far as to mean don't associate with anyone in a "bar" type setting. Don't date non-members. Only participate in a LDS scout troop. I remember quite a disagreement with our Bishop in San Diego when my parents allowed me to participate in a non-LDS scout troop.
While many may still see the church as backwards, trust me we have opened up a great deal.

That book looks great. But those women need to take their own time finding their way.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostYes, I guess that is true. Some folks haven't ventured outside of their comfort zone and noticed that there are lots of good people outside of the church given it is human nature. Rather than taking on change themselves they instead expect their world to change for them. In the end they dying while hiding in some corner because their cheese ran out.

Right now the church is sending out pamphlets to former members (I presume those who have formally resigned/been excommunicated) inviting them to "join with us." Seen a couple screen shots.Originally posted by byu71 View PostI am very happy that even church leadership has come to openly recognize this. I would love to ask them, what are you offering in order to have them return? I mean, who doesn't know you can return and for the most part initially be received better than a regular member? To me this shows a real disconnect between very fundamental members of the church and the whole of the church. Ex members are just waiting for the chance to come back?Originally posted by Pheidippides View PostRight now the church is sending out pamphlets to former members (I presume those who have formally resigned/been excommunicated) inviting them to "join with us." If I had left I would probably send back a note saying. I would love to come back. I will if you relax attendance requirements, allow someone to smoke a cigar on the golf course and do away with the honor code at BYU. Then I would add, two out of those 3 and I am in.
I am sorry, but I wouldn't demand the Priesthood for women.Last edited by byu71; 03-21-2014, 08:58 AM.

It also happens to be true. It is pretty bad, but seeing all of them vent and get angry over the same things helps me to keep my remaining anger minor. They about had a collective orgasm when Phillips filed the first lawsuit, and got suicidal when it was dismissed.Originally posted by Northwestcoug View Post

They are sending pamphlets to former members to come back? The reason many of the people have left is the issues that are still front and center; gay rights, gay marriage, women's equality. It seemed like the church the last few years understood this and changed course some. Small steps, but steps all the same. It seemed the more moderate wing of leadership was leading the way. Now that last little while it seems the Opus Dei wing has reenforced itself and taken over. What ever positive steps forward were taken the last few years are being dismantled. You have the reengagement/jihad on gay marriage. They have dusted off and broken out the religious freedom bullshit. If you look at the comparisons it is almost exactly the same arguments they were using while they were actively fighting the civil rights legislation in the sixties. I think even people who are not exactly Ordain Women supporters thought the letter read the other day sounded dismissive and arrogant. Even if they don't necessarily fully support ordination, many are seeing it still like were stuck in an episode of Mad Men much of the time with our attitudes toward women. You cannot drastically regress on these issues and then invite people back when these are the reasons they walked away in the first place.

I think you need to hold out for all three, also I would add that Sunday golf is fine and having a beer with friends after the round is acceptable.Originally posted by byu71 View PostI will if you relax attendance requirements, allow someone to smoke a cigar on the golf course and do away with the honor code at BYU.
