  • The Future of Mormonism?

    http://deadspin.com/5911756/a-sold-o...are-in-toronto

How many of you live in wards or stakes where you have been told not to have a facebook account and only have a computer if you have a strong filter to which you don't have the password?
A Mormon president could make a perfectly patriotic, competent, inspiring leader. But not Mitt Romney. He is a husked void. --David Javerbaum

Where I have been, Facebook and other social media have been leveraged to help stay in contact with members, particularly less active members.

I seriously doubt you will see this become SOP in the church.

What does that article have to do with Mormonism?
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I think the question you should be asking is: What does that article not have to do with Mormonism? (The answer is a lot.)

A member of our SP tried to friend me on FB. I declined but I have a couple of other FB friends who are in SPs (and a few bishops).

Coincidentally, the second half of our ward conference yesterday was devoted to the importance of computers and a demonstration of the many helpful local and church-wide websites. Everyone was also given the building's password for access to the server, thereby providing the previously uninformed with a wealth of distractions during meetings--I only hope this doesn't slow down the server, as I use it prodigiously during HP group. Mrs. PAC rolled her eyes at this information, as I was already logged onto both ESPN and LDS.org when the announcement was made. And pretty much everyone has an FB account, including the bish.

Nothing was mentioned about passwords, the evils of the internet, etc. This has been covered previously.

This is all very encouraging. There was a rash of facebook bashing in the early days by local church leaders. Quite a few of my married friends have joint accounts (only one account for both to share) to avoid affairs. I remember quite a few talks on using filters on computers, but haven't in a while. I am glad we are moving away from fear and control on this issue.

Last year we had a lesson in EQ on the importance of water tight Internet filters to keep out porn. I was surprised that several couples either had the wife keep the password or they each kept half the password so it could only be bypassed together.

I think the day might come when the Church gets into the IP business and offers members the opportunity to allow the Church to filter internet content for them. And if that happens, I would guess that the Church would filter a lot more than just porn.

wouldn't the water ruin your computer?

That's the best filter of all.

In my first married student ward some guy gave a talk where he proudly stated they had a filter and his wife and mother in law had the password where they could snoop on every website he browsed.

Go to mormon.org and look at a random member profile. At the very bottom of the page are Twitter and Facebook icons that you can use. The church is definitely embracing social media.
