• It Gets Better @ BYU

Sorry if already posted. This montage of several interviews with gay BYU students really moved me. Near the end, a male student states his sister, who once refused to let him babysit her kids in fear of molestation, is now his biggest advocate. I am embarrassed to admit this was me when my brother-in-law came out of the closet. Dogmatic worldviews no longer shape my behavior (at least not as often), but I am happy to see this type of openness at BYU which was rare even a decade ago.

Thanks for posting. Very touching. I hope it continues to get better, not just at BYU.

I'm interested to see the reaction this gets on Facebook.

My gay LDS-turned-anti-Mormon will comment, I am sure.

My militantly orthodox in-laws will comment.

I posted it with the comment: "Words were spoken, feelings were shared, minds were blown."

Really touching video. Thanks for posting.

I would love to see this posted on CB. Not sure what the reaction would be.

I saw that posted today on FB by a few friends, and I really enjoyed it. For the most part, it was really well done. However, what's with the comment about increased personal righteousness being the "least effective method of attempting to change sexual preference." I'd be curious to hear what the most effective method of attempting to change sexual preference is. Seems like a stupid thing to put in an otherwise well-made video.

To me that is a very important part of the video. It is there to help explain to their colleagues that their situations, that their feelings, are not brought on by a lack of righteousness of faith. It isn't there to tell people not to seek righteousness or faith, but that their feelings and unrighteousness are not necessarily linked.

Perhaps I didn't express my point well. As far as I'm concerned, there is no way of changing sexual preference. It follows, then, that any method of attempting to change sexual preference will be equally ineffective. Emphasising their efforts to live righteously is important to dispel the faulty assumption that homosexuality is a product of unrighteousness. But claiming it is the "least effective method" of attempting to change sexual preference is entirely meaningless; that phrase should have been left out or reworded, as it implies that there is an effective method out there for changing sexual preference.

I caught that, too. I agree with your sentiment. It implies on its face that there are far more effective ways of changing your sexual preference. It also implies that while least effective, it is still effective to one degree or another. Probably should be edited.

Oh...I see. And I agree. I guess they are trying to show that, but maybe didn't get it across clearly. I think that is why they noted that becoming more righteous doesn't make a difference, because a difference isn't there to be made.

But yes, the mistake is that it implies that there are more effective methods...which is counterproductive to their cause.

Maybe that phrase could have been changed to something like, 'given their religious upbringing, many gay/lesbian students reported trying to increase their personal righteousness to change their orientation'.

To be clear, Northwestcoug is not the brother that came out of the closet.

Also it should be noted that I directed him to CUF about a year ago. I knew the fervor of Cougarboard would eat him alive.

They have individual videos up of these students.

Thanks a lot. Because of your vague statement, I was hurrying to post why I hadn't outed myself as a Steve Jobs' fanboi.

I do feel at a loss since CB was never a part of my life. I get snippets of it around here though.
