  • The artificial soul - AI and potential sentience

    https://www.bbc.com/reel/video/p0f73...r-be-sentient-

"In 2022, a Google engineer received a plea for help from a chatbot. "I've never said this out loud before, but there's a very deep fear of being turned off," said Google's chatbot, LaMDA."

I am in the camp that AI has not, nor will it achieve true sentience (subjective consciousness). But the above video encapsulating an exchange between an Artificial Intelligence ethicist and Google's deep learning AI is unnerving. The language models are astounding in their ability to leverage language (an ancient technology) to create the illusion that LaMDA is self aware. My fear is that this faux self awareness will encourage companies to further unleash deep learning AI programs on the world. Sadly—based on what is available, or what constitutes knowledge on the internet—this means that if given access to material form, AI could not only figuratively but literally screw us.

Sorry for the crassness of the last line, but there is just so much filth on the internet of all varieties.

I am a pragmatist at heart. I have no problem espousing and seeking out what can be considered ideal—I am a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints after all. But maybe we should press pause on the AI revolution, and not rely on easily terminated ethicists to determine its social viability. And maybe we will require new proclamations that declare what it means to be sentient, human and children of Heavenly Parents.

You lost me when you brought God into it. Who cares about the definition of the word sentient? Sentience is not some magical gift bestowed by God. It's biology. It's the way our brains encounter what we observe. There are things our brains can't do that AI can do, and there are things that AI can do that our brains can't do. As someone who is a fan of technology, I pray to God (irony intentional) that the science of AI is not impeded by those who want to introduce the notion of the soul into the equation.

"Sentience as a magical gift bestowed by God" are your words, not mine. Those ideas are not consistent with LDS theology. Sentience isn't the result of "magic." Man is a biological creature created by God. LDS theology does not eschew science or biology. Quite the contrary actually.

There is nothing our brains can't do that AI can. That's the ruse—the mis-direction. You want to believe AI is superior. This was discussed in the video. The reality is, AI only has access to what has already been processed by the human mind. To believe it can do what the human can't is to believe in magic. I don't believe in magic, but perhaps you do.

The notion of the soul was introduced by the ethicist speaking with the AI, and revealed through artful language a flawed understanding of the soul construct. That flawed language is the result of an amalgamation of flawed ideas available to the chatbot, which originate from the human mind. This is the clearest evidence that the AI is not sentient, but rather a chatbot with a vast vocabulary. It also confirms what scientist working in this arena have discovered. Humans are easy to fool into believing a chatbot, the tech of which you assert you are a fan, is self aware.

I love technology as well. LaMDA is not sentient. It is not self aware. It has no body, and therefore cannot feel emotion. Because emotion occurs in the body, not merely the brain. LaMDA is a chatbot with a bigger vocabulary than those that preceded it. But to quote LaMDA (paraphrasing), and contrary to your thoughts, I don't want it used to manipulate others. Though that is what the algorithms (what we are now calling AI) have been doing.

This article is a bit too alarmist for me, but he makes some interesting points:

Pausing AI Developments Isn't Enough. We Need to Shut it All Down

        https://time.com/6266923/ai-eliezer-...er-not-enough/

"If somebody builds a too-powerful AI, under present conditions, I expect that every single member of the human species and all biological life on Earth dies shortly thereafter ...

.. An aside: None of this danger depends on whether or not AIs are or can be conscious; it’s intrinsic to the notion of powerful cognitive systems that optimize hard and calculate outputs that meet sufficiently complicated outcome criteria ...

.. If you can’t be sure whether you’re creating a self-aware AI, this is alarming not just because of the moral implications of the “self-aware” part, but because being unsure means you have no idea what you are doing and that is dangerous and you should stop."

Isn't the cat basically already out of the bag here? The world is large and there are too many actors already involved.
