I hear you.Originally posted by Indy Coug View PostI'm just trying to gauge how far the pedulum swung.
It is tough to say with any certainty. My guess is that the Church's stance mirrors that of the rest of conservative America. It continues to progress, albeit slowly.
If this twitter is accurate, it is a big deal, I think. A very big deal. I agree with JeffLebowski....my gut tells me that there are some members who enjoy these Prop 8 edicts because those members incorrectly feel that the edicts give them an excuse to flaunt their prejudice in the name of righteousness.
Perhaps this is a way for the Church to also tell its fringe radical element to calm down a bit (I wonder if someone at the COB read that blog calling for all gays to be killed and for women to divorce their apostate husband).
Oh, well. At any rate, it is good to know that as a Church, we may soon "officially" support equal access to jobs and housing for gays.
Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Interesting. Do they care whether they're constituents are interested in following the prophet?Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostBased on a few personal conversations I have had with Utah legislators, I can assure you that some of them feel that fighting against gay rights on all fronts is a form of following the prophet.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. This is good news but it begs a question I'm sure has been discussed on this forum. Has the church ever been against equal rights to gays (besides allowing them to call their unions marriages)?Originally posted by scottie View Post
I honestly don't know the answer but it has always seemed to me that the church is for equal rights but it is the membership of the church that has interpreted that to mean they are against the gay community as a whole."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Wow. I'm impressed. One giant step for mankind...to offer its support for proposed Salt Lake City ordinances extending protection to gays in the areas of employment and housing.Last edited by SeattleUte; 11-10-2009, 02:11 PM.When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

You know the church has been against civil unions for homosexual couples in the past right?Originally posted by Eddie Jones View PostThis is good news but it begs a question I'm sure has been discussed on this forum. My legislator friend told me that he has an article written by Elder Oaks that argues that any kind of special treatment for gays via legislation is a slippery slope leading to gay marriage and that we should fight gay rights at every step. He promised to send me a copy but I haven't seen it yet. I am skeptical.Originally posted by Eddie Jones View PostThis is good news but it begs a question I'm sure has been discussed on this forum. I didn't know that, which is why I said "I honestly don't know the answer." I've always assumed they had been against them at one point, which is probably why the general membership tends to lean that way. But as far as the history of same-gender attraction and the church I'm a novice so I'm learning.Originally posted by Flystripper View PostYou know the church has been against civil unions for homosexual couples in the past right?
I've just never seen an official church position stating they are against civil unions, but like I said I'm a novice."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.
