Very true. This is a concept that many here in Utah have had trouble grasping.

        I hear you.

It is tough to say with any certainty. My guess is that the Church's stance mirrors that of the rest of conservative America. It continues to progress, albeit slowly.

If this twitter is accurate, it is a big deal, I think. A very big deal. I agree with JeffLebowski....my gut tells me that there are some members who enjoy these Prop 8 edicts because those members incorrectly feel that the edicts give them an excuse to flaunt their prejudice in the name of righteousness.

Perhaps this is a way for the Church to also tell its fringe radical element to calm down a bit (I wonder if someone at the COB read that blog calling for all gays to be killed and for women to divorce their apostate husband).

Oh, well. At any rate, it is good to know that as a Church, we may soon "officially" support equal access to jobs and housing for gays.

Interesting. Do they care whether they're constituents are interested in following the prophet?

True, but the church probably has a large influence over them, no?

This is good news but it begs a question I'm sure has been discussed on this forum. Has the church ever been against equal rights to gays (besides allowing them to call their unions marriages)?

I honestly don't know the answer but it has always seemed to me that the church is for equal rights but it is the membership of the church that has interpreted that to mean they are against the gay community as a whole.

to offer its support for proposed Salt Lake City ordinances extending protection to gays in the areas of employment and housing.
Wow. I'm impressed. One giant step for mankind...

You know the church has been against civil unions for homosexual couples in the past right?

My legislator friend told me that he has an article written by Elder Oaks that argues that any kind of special treatment for gays via legislation is a slippery slope leading to gay marriage and that we should fight gay rights at every step. He promised to send me a copy but I haven't seen it yet. I am skeptical.

I didn't know that, which is why I said "I honestly don't know the answer." I've always assumed they had been against them at one point, which is probably why the general membership tends to lean that way. But as far as the history of same-gender attraction and the church I'm a novice so I'm learning.

I've just never seen an official church position stating they are against civil unions, but like I said I'm a novice.

the church will support the protection of gays for housing and employment but not marriage? I find this very hypocritical. oh well, I'm not a very good mormon then

I am glad that the Church is set to reach out to the gay community and not for a reach around to the gay community.

But seriously, this is a good step. Not good enough, but good.
