Been once. Never again. Similar experiences as noted previously. Bad food, bad service, bad costumes on the divers.

I just realized something that may explain some things. When we moved back here from Texas, the Mayan was one of the first places we went, at my BIL's insistence. He had raved about how great it was (food, not just experience).

Perhaps this experience soured me on all Utah cuisine and this explains my pathological hatred of all most things Utah?

        Nah ...

Does your BIL hate you and your wife? I can think of no other reason one would insist on the Mayan as a dining choice.

Any La Poo-Poo Mexican restaurant is going to blow away Mayan in terms of food quality. Su Casa obliterates it, and that is about as cheap as you can get in a sit-down. My favorite Mexican restaurants are the ones with homemade tortillas/chips/salsas/etc, mismatched silverware and plates, and you really need to order in Spanish to get the best stuff. The Iguanas were stellar before Ramon Cardenas passed away. I haven't been back since, but they are probably still pretty good.

For the life of me I can't understand why The Mayan won't upgrade the food quality. The experience is kitschy but soon underwhelms. If they had better food the place could be a must-see. Perhaps they are busy enough they have become complacent?

I take people to Tio's in Murray all the time. Never had any complaints.

I had a similar experience. Horrendous food and the worst service imaginable. It is the only time in my life I have not left a tip, the service was just that bad. I used to wait tables, so normally it takes a lot for me to leave anything less than 20%, stiffing someone is something I never thought I'd do. Absolutely the worst dining experience I've had. It is making me angry just thinking about it.

Sometime watch 'Fred: The Movie' (Netflix it, do NOT pay for it!). The Mayan experience is ALMOST as bad.

Went to Casa Bonita in 1978 and thought the food was really bad. Went to the Mayan about a year after it opened and thought the food was really bad.
Other horrid Mexican restaurants I have eaten at include Los Hermanos, Guadalahonky's, Chi Chi's, The Tampico and South of the Border. Glad to live in a place where there is really, really good Mexican food.

Utah is so starved for anything resembling culture, it's amazing something better doesn't exist.
