I have messed around with computers for a long time but I'd never actually built one. This sucker is pretty decent - liquid cooling on an i7 4770k at 3.5 ghz w/ 24gb ram. All on an Asus z87 deluxe Mobo. Three hard drives for a total of 4TB of storage. I almost got an SSD but didn't the last minute. I stole the video card and power supply from my old desktop (both were installed aftermarket by me, and were good).

I wanted it for advanced video and photo editing, but it's good enough for a gaming machine I think.
I did a similar build last year (minus the liquid cooling, + SSD & high-end graphics). I find it to be a lot of fun, and it really is a lot cheaper than buying a pre-built unless one doesn't care about substandard parts. This was my second build, but my last computer was a pre-built from "ibuypower" that ended up needing a lot of maintenance due to some substandard parts (power supply and case, mostly), although the mobo wasn't very good either and ultimately is what killed the thing.

Then again, buying all the parts separately makes my brain need to research every single piece and make sure it's the best value for my buck. So it's not very time efficient that way. But it allows confident overclocking so good times.

The liquid cooling was, frankly, the hardest part of the build, and it wasn't that hard. My case didnt have quite enough clearance above the built in heat sinks for the radiators and fans, so I had to do a bit of modding (I was installing a corsair h100i). It was fun.

that's a pretty well endowed box. with liquid cooling you need to crank that i7 up past 4.0ghz!

That's the idea, eventually, but I am an overclocking virgin.

The liquid cooling is pretty slick. Easy install, even considering the minor modding.

The lack of SSD (and I'm assuming your drives are SATA which is as slow as it gets) is the glaring weak spot. Go ahead and overclock if you want pretty benchmarks to say it's fast. But I/O will kill you.

Agreed. An SSD would add way more general responsiveness to that rig than any amount of overclocking will. I'm loving mine, although I look forward to the price continuing to drop; it can be annoying to have to uninstall stuff to keep only the most-used programs on the boot drive.

SSD caching is your friend to get better I/O and more economical storage capacity.

Edit: I didn't bother checking if your hardware supports this or not.

Don't worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are any good, you'll have to ram them down people's throats.

                • i definitely endorse an ssd, but for video encoding/photo editing/rendering the bottleneck is the cpu.

Yeah, this I know. But I was already over budget and couldn't push it much more. I was lucky I could steal my graphics card (geForce 650ti) from my old machine.

I splurged a bit on the case (just over $100). Totally worth it - made the install super easy.

Spent most of the evening last night installing drivers, getting it all updated, installing CS6, etc. The thing is blazing fast and runs super cool, as you'd expect with the liquid cooling. Shockingly quiet too. And another great thing: I don't have to uninstall all that crap that comes on Dell POS computers. Don't remind me about the Symantec wars of 2006.

My wife - the real photo/video editor - is very happy.

                    • When I was in DC last week, my traveling companion (some of you might know him) and I stopped at this taco shop for dinner. I told the lady I wanted it to go and she looked at me puzzled. She then asks "like in a plastic bag?" Yes I said in a plastic bag. I notice her punch the register and charge me for the plastic bag. What kind of yuppie ass country do we live in when the nations capital is charging for plastic. Screw the EPA, I saw a Papa JOhns delivery man banging on the front door one afternoon and I now the cardboard used for those pizza boxes will end up in the trash and not the recycling bin.

But i get why you'd question your sanity for liking them. I still have a hard time getting over the past of both the Kia and Hyundai names.
I got over it and bought a Sonata. Very happy with it so far.
