Mark Wainberg, a pioneer in AIDS research, died in a swimming accident. He helped discover 3TC and mutational resistance in HIV. Also the president of the International AIDS Society for a few years. He was 71.
I doubt many people will recognize his name, but he was a McGill professor who lectured us a couple of times. He unapologetically marched in the Montreal Pride parades, back when it wasn't so popular to do so. He was also an advocate of mass circumcision (not forceful) in Africa to stem the AIDS epidemic. Maybe I don't want to know, but how would circumcision impact the transmission of AIDS?Originally posted by Northwestcoug View PostMark Wainberg, a pioneer in AIDS research, died in a swimming accident. It all has to do with the microenvironment of the foreskin. It is a 'breeding ground' for infectious diseases, since it is difficult to keep clean. It is well documented that circumcision decreases the rate of HPV transmission by about half in developing countries, when compared to uncircumcised men (with all else being equal). There is a similar reduction for HIV.Originally posted by falafel View PostMaybe I don't want to know, but how would circumcision impact the transmission of AIDS?

Wouldn't thinking of it from the perspective of the planet mean we want fewer humans?Originally posted by Northwestcoug View PostIt all has to do with the microenvironment of the foreskin.
