Why not take GE classes in summer school? A missionary in either situation is going to be gone just as long and the same missed opportunity to save money for the following semester.

Since the U is a commuter campuses its young men go on missions when they turn 19. Maybe they do a semester and leave etc... (Myself and Solon were one both this way). Thus when they come back from their mission they have longer than a typical mormon Y student but their "clock" has already started.
That was how I was at the Y

There was more of you and me at the U. There are a lot more out of state guys going to byu then the U has.

For the same reason you don't do summer school right after you graduate high school

Because they would only have 3 months to recuperate before Summer courses began?

No because you get home in the middle of the semester... Obviously you can't go. Then its summer. who wants to spend their summers in school? So you work, go on road trips whatever...

Nothing further. I'll pass the witness.

really I don't why it takes the average person longer to graduate from the U than the Y. what I explained a above is part of the explanation. Another part is that people are retaking a couple classes because they werent serious before their mission (I am one of those even though I graduated 3 years after I got home from my mission). Maybe there is more of tendency to work and go to school part time at the U than at the Y.

A private university being more selective. Imagine that.

I was merely reemphasizing my point that there is often a conscious decision of those who return mid-year to take a semester off before hitting the books again.

As for dinking around, I know all too well how that happens. I screwed up royally in my college academics before my mission, and paid a heavy price upon returning. Even though I retook courses and got my GPA nice and high, and did very well on the LSAT, my poor pre-mission grades ended up costing me a shot at some top-ranked law schools.

Yeah but would you have ever done a slide show about Cat Shockers at Georgetown?

They're both good enough for what they are. Neither is "great." Smartest kids at either are about as smart as anyone anywhere, but most of us here don't fit into that category. Plenty of slow kids at both, but Utah surely takes more lower-tier applicants than the BY. In related news, those lower-tier applicants don't always make it to graduation. Big deal. Besides, since when does "time to graduate" necessarily translate into quality of education? If you want to truck out "quality of education" smack, the BYU is going to struggle to overcome its censure by the AAUP.

And as for you guys piling on MRD for not going to school in the summer, back the hell off. He worked his ass off every summer - and throughout all the school year - to pay for school, and still graduated on time.
