  • The Official Mac Thread

I don't want to clutter either the iPad or iPhone threads with Mac stuff, so I thought I would start a new thread. I came out of the closet and picked up a new Macbook Pro this week. Holy cow, my world is upside down. Trying to get my bearings and figure out how to navigate this new universe. Maybe I can use this thread to get some tips from Uncle Ted, Surfah, and anyone else who also putts from the rough. Oh, and you can use this thread to say nice things about wuap if you like.

Things I really like thus far:

    -Trackpad and gestures
    -Startup speed (amazing)
    -Thin and light
    -Battery life
    -Overall beautiful design of hardware
    -Sound quality of built-in speakers

    Things I don't like:

-Menu bar stuck to top of window. Makes much more sense to attach it to app like they do on windows.
-Fonts. That bold helvetica or whatever just doesn't look clean.

I have a MacBook Pro and have no idea what I'm doing with it. I've always used a PC in school/work, so I'm completely lost with that thing. Basically it's just an expensive device to surf the internet.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

        I appreciate the retina display.

I had a problem with the menu bar at first, but now I like it.

spotlight is brilliant, one of the best parts of osx. it's also much, much more intuitive to install/uninstall apps than the windows model.

Yes, the screen is great. Also forgot to mention the hard drive speed. I am used to SSD drives, but this one seems 2-3 times faster than my other SSD.

Also, I won't ever own anything but a mac. PCs are cool for writing legal briefs on word and that's about it for me.

I LOVE imovie, photobooth, and garageband. So user friendly and indispensable.

I also am a fan of Lauchpad on the new Mountain Lion OS. Very streamlined and cool.

Well then, command T gives you a new tab on your browser, but more importantly in excel it functions as f4 on a pc giving you the all important $ in your formulas.

I also love the ability to darken the screen when I'm not at my desk or around or when I'm d/ling movies and stuff overnight. Use the 2 buttons to the right of your ESC button to do this.

*your keyboard backlight can also be controlled by the f5/f6 buttons.

osx also has a snake module in emacs, so you got that going for you. it's pretty sweet.

I transferred to another unit at work and no longer have my MacBook Pro and Mac Pro.

                          Oh how I miss them.

There is a learning curve to it. Everyone says it is intuitive but I never thought so. Especially the menu. I'll also disagree with Cam about the installing and uninstalling. Installing for me confused the hell out of me at first. But once you get the short cuts down and learn some of the quirks like that pesky menu bar (I never got used to it even after two years of daily use) it feels natural. The touchpad and gestures is the greatest feature IMO. I had one instead of a mouse for my Mac Pro I liked it so much on the MBP. I got so used to it that I'd come home and get on my Lenovo Laptop and start trying to use them. Man I miss that thing.

Also, get yourself nice VM to be able to run your Windows programs on there. I suggest Parallels.
