  • Elf on a Shelf

Not sure if this has been posted yet. This sums up how I feel about all the effing Elf posts flooding my news feed on Facebook. We don't own one, hate to think I'd have to convince Phat that we need 4. I could really care less what everyone's Elf did last night. Just sayin'.

I had never heard of elf on a shelf until a few weeks ago. My wife was asking if I knew what they were. Then when we were up in the hills buying our giant Christmas tree she saw one in a little gift shop there - half price because of a broken ear - and now we own one. I'll have to ask my wife why it's sitting on a jar in the kitchen rather than on a shelf somewhere.

So is this just a fad that will soon die away, or is it something that will become another Christmas tradition forever more?

We have an Elf on the Shelf. We started it a couple of years ago. The Puffy Check named him Max. They love it. They wake up early every morning and look for him. I put him in weird places, including inside the blender, in a weighted plastic bag at the bottom of a bathtub filled with water, and hanging from a noose in our main entryway. The kids don't really know what a noose is so they think it is all in fun.

We don't have one that I'm aware of. In fact, I had never even heard of it until my so called Elf on the Shelf DVR'd a damn cartoon about Elf on the Shelf while we were out of town over the weekend. Luckily my kids have yet to extrapolate the cartoon into their own reality. For now, watching some stupid animated (physically and emotionally) skip around and sing songs about elves and shelves is more entertaining than the reality of such a thing. I call this a Christmas miracle.
I told him he was a goddamn Nazi Stormtrooper.

We also have one and we have put him in the freezer, in the pantry with a straw in his mouth and the straw in the syrup bottle, and he has hung from just about every light fixture. My kids love it.

          They named him: Mistletoe.

Our Elf on the Shelf is named Christopher, and the hit this year was when I stacked 6 rolls of paper towels in a tower on the closed seat of the kids' toilet and put him on top. Last night he was on the handle to the milk jug, and the night before I made a Lincoln Log house out of pretzel sticks with him inside it.

I may have to steal DDD's plastic bag in the tub idea.

I might have to try seeing if my wife likes searching for her Elf On A Shelf every day.

Or maybe not. I would probably end up parking my car tire on top of it. Actually I'm saving that for that tacky sculpture of Santa with the lion and the lamb. Am I the only one who can't stand that one? (I finally got her go get rid of the framed picture of the same thing.)

This means ours isn't too far behind.

It is totally fun. There is a very small window that we have as parents in which our children really believe in Santa and the magic of X-mas. We are going to enjoy that window until it shuts and then our kids all ask for iPads and money. Elf on the Shelf makes each day really fun.

There are other ways to keep magical world views alive but I know what you mean.

Amen brother. We recently realized this year is our first year there is not going to be a single toy under the tree.

My wife usually hides ours now, she said that mine were usually inappropriate
