Dress Shirts

what's the verdict on charles tyrwhitt? i have a couple of their slim fit shirts that i like ok, but at $30 i might get a couple.

Anyone have any experience with Joseph A Bank? I need to buy a couple of suits, and they're having one of their 200 yearly "buy 1 get 3" sales. I also need to buy a bunch of dress shirts made.

If you're so inclined, tell me what you think about:

Buttoned collars?
Number of buttons on sleeves? (My mentor says 4 is classic)
Single or double breasted?

I'll be getting suits/shirts all dry cleaned. I'll only wear the suit jacket < 20% of the time.

Good thing we have a decent amount of lawyers who have to dress well. If it was all engineers I just get advice about Kirkland jeans.

I wear jeans and polos to work, so I'm not an expert and won't comment on that other than to recommend a website. That site tends to have a lot of people there that know quite a bit about dress and grooming and may be helpful in providing additional feedback for you.

That's what I was thinking. Lay flat is exactly what I don't want a collar to do.

You just need some Wurkin Stiffs. I've purchased a set, but my wife is giving them to me for Father's Day, so I haven't been allowed to sample yet. I immediately ordered some after meeting with a client a few weeks ago. His no-button collar was laying as perfectly against his shirt as any buttoned collar. I actually complimented him on his shirt--and the collar, specifically--at which point he revealed his secret.

And while I like it and the collar stays put, I still find myself wishing it had buttons so it would lay even better. I feel that way about most of the non-button shirts I have. But I haven't set this rigid rule in my head about wearing button collars that others seem to have. I save my silly rigid rules for not mixing brown and black and never wearing shades of blue with black shoes. I'm sticking to those no matter how many times I hear it's fine to do them.

I have 3 Jos. A. Bank suits that I got on the buy 1 get 2 free deal. They are the nicest suits I've ever had, which is not saying much. I believe the ones I got were "valued" at $1000 each, which of course is much more than I would have ever paid for one of them. But I think my suits are probably comparable to full-priced suits in the $500 range. I had a Joseph Aboud suit from Nordstrom that cost about $700, and I think my Jos. A. Bank suits are just as nice as that one (which I thought was pretty nice for a "low end" suit).

When I was trying on stuff at Jos. A. Bank, I didn't think the quality of the "$800" line and below as nearly as nice as the $1000 line. I would not purchase anything below the $800 line, I don't think. That's as far as suits go anyway.

J. Riggins turned into Jos A. Bank, just like Copper Rivet and Chess King were merged to form The Buckle.

Personally, I like the stuff you can get at the Brooks Brothers outlets. Once in awhile their stuff goes on sale so you can get their dress shirts for $30-40, but it's hard to figure out when they have these sales.

BTW, please PM me whenever Nordstrom's has its sales. I'm in dire need of some dress shirts.

That looks nice. So you just use those in place of the regular stays? I have a shirt that buttons under the collar, and it lays just like that shirt looks. It would be nice if more shirts did that.

There is a little magnet that goes under the shirt. I admit, when I first saw this guy's shirt, I assumed it was one with the under-collar buttons. But as our meeting wore on, I noticed that there was no way it was an under-collar button.
