  • iPhone: No jacket required.

The iPhone, especially the 4 and 4s models, are very pretty bits of kit... that is, until someone puts one of those ugly jackets onto it. Take off the jacket. Surrender to the fates, and trust that the gods of good industrial design will protect your phone.

I took off my jacket about a year ago. I'm not a careful phone user. I keep it in my jeans pocket, often with keys and change. This has resulted in some minor cosmetic damage, but nothing that would ruin the looks or utility more than a jacket. Why do people buy a slick, svelte, beautiful iPhone and then turn it into a rubberized dirt magnet that will no longer fit comfortably in your pocket?

I agree, I hate having any kind of skin or cover on my phone. I used to think that it might be a good idea for resale, but phones are so outdated within 18 months that it makes little sense, IMO.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

lol! Just add a screen protector film with some hair and dust bubbles under it to perfect this image.

I took the case off my 3GS several months ago and haven't had any problems, but the last two iphones have been made of glass, and are infamously fragile. If I end up getting one of the new ones I would probably have to get a case for it.

The far greater durability of various android phones is one of the reasons I'm strongly considering moving away from apple for my next phone. Then again, I also recently heard that applecare now covers accidental damage? How much does that cost?

I'm with you robin, my iphone 4 has been naked for about 8 months now with only minor cosmetic damage. I've also used the zagg invisible shields on previous iphones and loved them since they protect your phone from scratches but you don't have to compromise the design of the phone with crappy plastic.

ZAGG gear is vastly overpriced but it works.

Because people let their kids use their iPhones instead of getting them their own iPod touch.

That would be a perfect case for you, Uncle Ted. And when your phone ran out of charge, you could always give it a jumpstart by hooking it up to the cables attached to the bolts on your neck.

I use some sort of silicon case our IS people gave me. I think it has saved my iphone a couple of times when I have dropped it on concrete. It doesn't prevent me from putting the phone in my pocket, which is how I always carry it, and it is easy to take off, which I do when I have a long message to type (the case tends to make me miss the space bar for some reason). I like the case. I do not use a screen protector, however. As they dont feel right.
                  PLesa excuse the tpyos.

So I shared this thread with my wife yesterday, and encouraged her to go 'naked'. Of course she dropped her phone tonight and scratched the corner.

When does the iPhone 5 come out?

This is exactly why I keep the case on. I know that as soon as I take it off, I'll drop it and damage it. I had an original iPhone that I didn't keep in a case because it looked better. I changed my opinion when I dropped it and broke the volume button. The button to lower the volume was stuck down, so you couldn't turn up the volume at all. Fortunately, it was still under warranty (barely). Still, I drop my phone from time to time, and I'd prefer to keep it working.
                        Not that, sickos.

Why do people drop their phones, but they don't drop their babies? Are people thinking to themselves, "Don't drop the baby... don't drop the baby... don't drop the baby..." every time they hold their infants in their arms? Maybe at first, but not after time, yet people don't typically drop their babies, nor do they feel the need to put a helmet on the baby. The helmet would totally ruin the aesthetics of the baby. And it is just a guess on my part, but if the baby had a helmet, I think that maybe on some subconscious level, people might be more prone to dropping the baby. The thing about dropping babies is this -- most of the time it only causes minor cosmetic damage. Definitely not worth putting a helmet on the baby.

I see your point. Also nobody will throw you in jail for dropping your phone. The real question is why are people having babies when they could just buy phones?

I'm not a tech savvy guy, and I'm not obsessed with having the latest and greatest. But, do you think it's worth buying a discounted iPhone 4? More than anything, I'm concerned about speed. My 3GS seems to be running slowly. Is there a difference in processor speed from 3GS to 4?
