Whatever we lose in efficiency, we gain in quality of life.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

This was kind of the situation I found myself in - I was gone half the month and then the other half I barely used the car.

I definitely wasn't making any grand political statements by giving up my car. It just made sense.

I went without a car for a couple years and loved it. Now I have access to an old beater that I drive once a week or so for errands. I hope I'll always be able to live close to enough to work to walk.
