  • NY Times Connections game (for those of us that are too stupid to play Wordle)

I've tried wordle. I suck at it. It probably has something to do with my suboptimal intelligence.

I have started playing Connections and I really like it. It also appears to cater to someone of my intelligence level.

    Got today's with 1 mistake.

    I love connections. Fun game.

Today’s game was easy. I failed yesterday’s game.

I enjoy Connections. I think, like NYT crossword, the Sunday games are the toughest. I've yet to fail a day yet, though I was down to my last strike a couple weeks back.
Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

I don't like Connections - it seems "arbitrary" to me (not sure how to describe why I don't like it but that's the best word). I like Spelling Bee and Letter Boxed and I also do the Tiles game every day, oh yeah, and the Crossword daily. I don't do Wordle anymore.

Isn't spelling bee the one that decides what words are words and what words aren't? Way more arbitrary than Connections, IMO.

LOL. I suck at connections. Well, I sucked on my first try today. I guess I try again now that I get the concept.

Indeed it is. Over time I've learned which words Sam Ezersky allows and doesn't allow (he's heavy on Yiddish stuff and won't allow titty but will allow dildo ) so I've come to accept it, but yes, sometimes I will still get frustrated when he disallows a perfectly good word. I suppose I could get used to Connections over time but I didn't want to invest any time in it.

I played Connections for the first time this afternoon after reading the above. I succeeded, but can see how one could come up with some kind of connection for nearly any combination. It's kind of like Cliff Clavin's Final Jeopardy answer to the question, "Archibald Leach, Bernard Schwartz, and Lucille LeSeuer." Rather than go with "Who are Cary Grant, Tony Curtis and Joan Crawford?", Cliff opted for "Who are three people who have never been in my kitchen?" He wasn't wrong.

I also sometimes play Letter Boxed, although that's rarely much of a challenge (took me two turns to solve a puzzle that allowed up to six).

                Retirement is nice.

Yes, that's a great comparison. I still don't know if "arbitrary" is the right word but if it is then Connections seems a whole lot more arbitrary than Spelling Bee - at least in my mind.

Give it more time. It is fun.

I’m not good at connections. But I play it each day.

Connections is not arbitrary. But it’s not for the impatient. You can’t just say “these 4 words all have something in common, so they must be grouped together”. There might be another word that fits that commonality as well, but one of those 5 also fits another group. So it’s not just about finding things in common or even things most in common. It’s about finding the things in common which allow for other things that are also in common.

Take today’s for example. You can’t just say “well, “Smart” also means intelligence. So it’s arbitrary that they don’t allow Smart in the intelligence group.” Smart is the only word out there that would fit intelligence but also fits into tv surnames. That’s the entire point of the game. Nothing arbitrary about that.

                          Yes.

My problem is that I sometimes don’t have the necessary patience.
