He could've said, "hmm... this is a nice young man, no record, no issues, all the documentation is there... I should just let him take care of his thing back in Utah."
I find this interesting. If you were dressed poorly or didn't speak English or something he would be completely in his rights to treat you that way? Are you in favor of police profiling?

I didn't realize there was a difference. That probably explains why so many of my boardmails appeals didn't make any difference in my sentence.

Stop. You're not the one who loves immigrants. You're the one that hates them. Don't try and portray yourself as a defender of the poor and underprivileged, because your posts have already done the talking.

I'm speaking of context. I was dressed nicely and driving a nice car. If I had been dressed like a slob driving that car, then yes, he should've been curious as to why. I said nothing of race or language. I'm talking about context.

Okay, so as long as cops are not profiling based on race or language, more power to them.

              Gotcha.

Thanks for the write up, Tim. Police work is tough, for sure, and I would never want to deal with the stress of constantly putting my life in danger. That being said, police often pit themselves as adversaries to any person with whom they are talking. Starting off in a confrontational manner puts people on edge and can make a situation escalate needlessly.

Honestly, I think that a new, less agressive approach to traffic policing would go a long way to making ordinary citizens feel much better about their relationship with the police force. If otherwise law-abiding citizens feel like they must constantly be on guard because they are going five miles faster than a posted speed limit then you have created an unfortunate situation. A law that the majority of the citizenry breaks is not a good law. Of course, this doesn't even begin to approach the problems that many inner-city dwellers have with the police.

Have you ever been pulled over for going five mph the speed limit?

My cousin got ticketed a week or two ago for going five over.

I got a ticket for 6 over in a 25 zone going down hill. I know probably half the police in my town. All of them said the cop who gave me the ticket is notorious for doing that at the end of the month.

                        Holy cow.

But do you live in fear of being pulled over for going 5 over?

Nope, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. That also doesn't mean that I'm not breaking the law when I do so.

For your sake, think of that 5 as a 10. IMO, in most situations, 10 mph over the speed limit is not reckless driving, but can still give the police cause to pull you over and harass you.

Just this morning, a cop was behind me as I was driving out of my neighborhood on a 30 mph speed limit road. I set the cruise control at 30 as long as he was in my rear view mirror. Once he turned off the road, I went ahead and upped it to 35. Well, more like 34.

No not at all, as I said I know a lot of cops really well. I have four in my ward who thankfully have looked the other way numerous times when I have been going 8-10 over the speed limit (I have a dark blue Tacoma with BYU plates so I'm pretty easy to spot from a distance).

                                I think 10 is a better example.

Of course, then you have the fact that you really have issue with the law, not the police. If you think 10 mph over the speed limit is never reckless driving, then you need to take it up with the lawmakers. Cops that pull you over and ticket you for going so fast (AKA harass you) are just doing their job.
