Something I've told my kids too: say the economy is horrible and unemployment is 10%. If both parents have careers then the chance of the family being left in horrible shape with no income goes from 10% (if just the father works) down to 1% (if both parents work, some mathematical assumptions there that wouldn't always hold obviously). For women, planning to work makes so much more sense than putting all the eggs in the "husband working" basket that is subject to death, disability, divorce, down economy, etc.
