I was going to say that was really cool, then I saw that it was French.

A good week for video game releases this past week.

Alan Wake - Xbox 360 exclusive, Twin Peak/Steven King psychological thriller from Remedy (the Finnish studio that created Max Payne). I picked up the collectors edition at Best Buy on Tuesday evening. Havent played it yet, but friends have raved about this game.

Red Dead Redemption - Open world old western from Rockstar San Diego. Basically cowboy Grand Theft Auto. This game is getting excellent reviews across the board, and I am pumped to play it. My wife got this for me as a birthday present, but unfortunately got it for the PS3. Best Buy was out of the Xbox 360 version. I'm gonna take it back; I can wait for a 360 copy given that I'm still no where near finishing Dragon Age and want to play Alan Wake prior to jumping into Red Dead.

Anybody else pick up either of these games? There was also an arcadey racing game called Split Second released this week that is supposed to be quite fun as well.

Question for those of you who've played Final Fantasy XIII. I've never played any of the Final Fantasy games, but I saw XIII at a good price. I picked it up because I've heard a lot of good things about it, but I didn't know if it'll make sense to me having never played a FF game before. So is it more of a game that stands on its own, or does it lean heavily on the stories of previous FF games?
                Not that, sickos.

I have no actual idea, but I can't imagine that a knowledge of the prior games would be a prerequisite.

CW, care to post your reviews of these games? I've seen you playing Alan Wake recently. Any good?

Sure. I've been playing Alan Wake more than Red Dead. Finished Alan Wake last night. Very cool story and atmoshphere. This game will give you goose bumps. Frequently. It's not a "jumpy" kind of scary, its the nervousness of what is about to happen that really gets to you. I've enjoyed the game quite a bit, but it does get a bit repetitive by the end. Game took me about 12 hours to finish, maybe a little more. If you buy it new, you get a code to download the first round of DLC for free. I believe it comes out later this summer. Overall, the story is unique and refreshing, and I recommend picking this up.

Red Dead is very fun as well. If I had to pick between Alan Wake and Red Dead, I would take Red Dead. The game just opens in a manner that wows you and immerses you in the environment. The graphics and environments look fantastic, and it's just a very fun game to play. As with any Rockstar/GTA type game, there are TONS of things to do, so you can get very distracted as you are riding your horse back and forth along the main mission chains. I played GTA 4 and found it to be decent, but the game took itself too seriously. This game is all about having fun, and I find the world of the wild west to be more interesting and beautiful than the typical duller environments you find in GTA. This game also has multiplayer, which I hear is quite good, but I havent picked it up.

In short, both games are great, but if you have to pick one, go with Red Dead.

Awesome game I have discovered this week: Demon's souls for PS3. Weaklings need not apply, this game is tough. Even the first level. You have to learn from every action, enemy. etc. There are also some really cool concepts, like players leaving other players messages, hints, and bloodstains to see how others have died to avoid the same mistakes. Alot of customalizability, it is an action RPG (think diablo 2, but much better, and much harder.)

Buy it, if you think you can handle hard games. And no, I am not exagerating.

Strange story--I received an e-mail from Microsoft two days ago with the subject line "Purchase confirmation for Xbox Live 4000 Microsoft Points bundle" which I thought was strange because I definitely did not buy any MS points. I log in to my Xbox Live Account Management from my computer at work and it shows that not only did I buy the MS points, but I also purchased the latest DLC for Red Dead Redemption--the "Liars and Cheats" pack. I don't even own that game.

Assuming that somebody hacked into my account, I sent a complaint to MS customer support asking for a refund. Last night, I mentioned it to my wife, and she thought that our 4-year-old daughter had inadvertently purchased the MS points and downloaded the game add-on while trying to find her cartoon on Netflix ("Horseland"--I'll provide a review in another thread some time).

I looked at my downloaded content on my Xbox, and the Liars and Cheats pack was already downloaded--which means that the purchases did happen from my Xbox and not some hacker. I am a little surprised that these purchases could be made by pure button-mashing randomness. I tried to show my wife all the steps it takes to buy the MS points and I couldn't even find the option after five minutes of browsing around.

So, my question is--do you think MS will refund my money? Should I let my bank know that the CC transaction was unauthorized? Or should I just purchase the Red Dead Redemption game now that I have the DLC (plus an additional 3200 MS points that I will eventually use, no doubt)?

                              This is six months late.

A little background: I've played and beaten all Final Fantasy games, not including spin offs. I've loved every single one of them up until 12 which I felt departed from a successful formula that I loved, on it's own, however, it was a good if not great game.

FF13 is worse than twelve. It has an incoherent and boring storyline, Linear-to-a-fault game progression, and lacks any immersive qualities to speak of. The game, overall, still carries fantastic production values, visuals, incredible polish and an enjoyable battle system. I'd give it a 7.5/10

As to your question, all Final Fantasy games are stand alone stories and require no previous knowledge of past Final Fantasies. Looking at past Final Fantasy games and comparing them to new iterations is always fun though.

I got inFamous for the PS3. I haven't had a chance to play it much, but it seems pretty good.
