They got the youth involved somehow. It went through our stake a couple years ago, and now it's died down. There was a contest to see which ward could index the most names. It was promoted at every youth meeting. Youth would bear their testimonies about the importance of indexing and challenge each other to index more. I haven't heard anything on it for the last year or so.

Indexing is totally new to me. We haven't seen or heard anything about it here, which seems kind of odd.

I'll admit that a 5th Sunday lesson on indexing is better than a lesson on porn.

It has apparently hit our stake now. The stake president talked about it last week in ward conference. The high councilman talked about it yesterday in sacrament. The stake goal is $1,000,000+ names for the year. It will be interesting to see if the contagion takes hold on the ward level...

Wonder if I have any family lines in the $1,000,000 range

The contagion has come and gone in my area. No doubt it will reoccur. I hope I'm sufficiently inoculated. I was the first time although I still had to take the Genealogy SS class as my spouse was not immune.

I think that I have done that a couple of times on CUF. There must be something in my subconscious that makes me use the dollar symbol when I am talking about church related numbers.

Indexing still going strong here. I just received a detailed report for the stake that lists the number of names indexed by member.

Yay! More church TPS reports to oversee the members.

For the first time in my experience, "indexing" was mentioned two weeks ago by the HCman in his sac mtg talk. He was trying to get the YM/YW excited about family history work and mentioned indexing as something that could be done "online."

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Service Helps Inmates Look Beyond Themselves

David joined a team at the Kane County, Utah, jail that he found surprisingly comforting — the family history indexing team. “Indexing brought the inmates together in teamwork — like a sporting event — and it was really good to see in a setting like this,” the prisoner explained. “Indexing allows us to have a positive interaction with one another.”

The process of indexing uses FamilySearch software to view images of old records and requires volunteers to enter a variety of records — birth, marriage, death, census, ship logs and other sources — into the system. The data is then compiled by FamilySearch (an organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) into a searchable index, matched with corresponding images, published on FamilySearch.org and is then available for public use.

“Because of indexing, more people are discovering their ancestors more quickly than at any time in history,” said Mike Judson, who manages the indexing volunteer efforts for FamilySearch. “This ease of discovery is helping thousands of people every day to better understand who they are and where they came from.”

The Kane County indexers are among nearly 2,300 inmates in Utah, Idaho and Arizona who voluntarily participate in the family history indexing program sponsored by the Church. At the Utah State Corrections facility the indexing center runs three shifts a day, seven days a week, and supports that time with donated computer equipment and volunteer advisors from local units of the Church.

My parents served as missionaries at the Utah State Prison, working in the family history center there. Many of the inmates really enjoy the work.

The church is even emasculating prisoners these days.

I'm still not a fan of indexing. I guess it stems from my disinterest in genealogy.

Same. But I think it stems from my disinterest in doing boring stuff.

Yeah, same here. But I guess I would be a fan if I was in prison and had nothing better to do.
