Suit yourself. Mud isnt meant to patch and there is a reason why. Filler is dimensionally stable and will hold contours, etc., better. But if you like mud, then party on.

Btw, spackle is also a little different. For stuff like this damage I prefer a polymer type filler, although spackle is fine too, of course. I agree it isn't that big of a deal, but if I was trying to match that curve, I would prefer a filler.PLesa excuse the tpyos.
