He is one of the reasons we have a NATIONAL government and not a FEDERAL government today. Besides, Andrew Johnson and U.S. Grant actually passed much of the legislation that is traditionally attributed to Lincoln.

The memorial is cool, however.

While my temple is the Jefferson Memorial, I do plan to visit Lincoln again later this month. I felt the spirit stronger at both than I ever did in god's temples.

In addition to the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, I loved wandering around Arlington, esp the Tomb of the Unknowns. I also took the time to just wander around some of the graves of the regular GIs not just the famous ones.

I also feel very reverant at the Wall - my family has a special connection with a couple of names on it.

arlington is a really powerful place. everyone should be able to make it there at least once.

Nah, but I take frequent trips. Usually to NY or Atlanta, but this will be my second time in DC. The GF and I just love to do big city touristy stuff.

Wow. I just was in DC till Tuesday with my 12 year old son, indoctrinating him about things that truly matter. How disappointing had we not made it to the Lincoln Memorial. We made a point of returning to it most nights we were there.

Concerning Woot's point about feeling the spirit at the memorials, I was remembering my first trip to DC, and Gettysburg, with my uncle (who was working on a graduate degree in DC and went on to become a BYU law professor). I was nine, and those images have stayed with me ever since. I have always ever since pictured in my mind's eye the words inscribed on the walls of the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials, the electric map and battlefield at Gettysburg. The Capitol (my favorite building anywhere in the world) and the concept imparted to me at that time about the miracle of collaborative goverment of, by and for the people and how this was so imperiled by the civil war. The experienced changed me forever. (It happened that this was during the civil rights riots, and I remember nightly curfews. I really do owe my uncle a special thank you, as I know that 9 year olds are not always easy travel companions and I was no exception. Because of this experience, I make a similar piligrimage with each of my children.)

Now there's an even richer experience to be had. You have the MLK memorial -- boy was he ever the Dr. J of oratory. His memorial is close to FDR's, and his quotations make FDR's lines look prosaic. And it seems he was never reading form a text. I love the huge MLK statue. The FDR memorial captures the man's strength, contributions to our republic and personal vulnerabilties perfectly. Gettysberg has changed. The wonderful electric map is gone. But the 360 degree oil painting and movie may be even more effective, when combined with the 3 hour CD battlefield tour. And now there is an awful contrasting experience provided by the Holocaust museum, which traces in depth the phenomonon of 20th century totalitarianism, the advent and progress of WWII, and the genocide. The Gutenberg Bible at the Library of Congress is not to be missed, and not for its religious significance. The reading room is always a marvel, and you can still go in there if you take the time to get a library card. A scholar showed us a beautiful US first edition of the Hobbit.

Someone vandalized SU's temple...

Green paint was splattered overnight on parts of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., U.S. Park police say.They say a patrol officer found green paint splashed on the floor near the famous statue of President Lincoln, and some on the base of the statue, at around 1:20 a.m. local time. No messages were written, according to the National Park Service.The memorial, on the National Mall, will be closed until the National Park Service can clean it up. The NPS told CBSNews.com that they are using citrus-based cleaners and power washers to clean the paint.An investigation is under way.

It was about 1:20 in the morning, I think, but it was about two years ago. One of the many reasons I love my daughter in law is because of her deep admiration for Lincloln. SHe would much rather string up the desecrators than do any damage herself.

Ummm, the Articles of Conferation Anti - Federalists lost. "We the people" replaced that type of federal idea with "a more perfect" national union.

Its always been a little funny to hear folks say they are Constitutionalists only to argue, often verbatim, those that fought the greater national power explicitly created by the new system. The most ironic was the group of Utah State Legislators who started calling themselves the Patrick Henry Caucus. Did they ever read a word of what he said fighting against ratification of the Constitution?
