  • A murder in my town.

A few weeks before we moved to Pleasanton (in '08), a Relief Society instructor in our ward didn't show up to give her lesson. Soon thereafter, she and her husband were found in the home, lying in pools of blood where they had been bludgeoned to death a few days earlier. In the course of their investigation, the police began to zero in on their son (Ernie Sherer) as the likely culprit. He was a BYU grad and had married in the Oakland Temple, but early in his marriage he decided he would become a professional poker player.

The story was the subject of a CBS 48 Hours Mystery a few days ago, but I didn't get around to watching it until last night. It's 45 minutes long, but worth a watch when time permits. It was especially interesting for us since all of the Pleasanton shots are within walking distance of our house. There's also some pretty good detective work here, kind of surprising for our quiet little burg.

It's weird to see the suspect grinning in front of the Temple and the "The World is Our Campus" sign.

For those who lack the patience or interest:
Spoiler for How the case ended:
The guy did a fairly good job of covering his tracks, including wearing size 12 Nike boots (he was only a size 10) and gloves. But the cops traced his cellphone locations during the hours leading up to the murders, including a brief stop in Nevada. They learned he had bought gas in Nevada, next to a Nike Outlet store where a few minutes after he got got gas, someone paid cash to buy size 12 Nike boots, soccer goalie gloves and a baseball bat.

The D.A. built his case on circumstantial evidence, but the jury found Ernie guilty on both counts of Murder 1, and he's now serving two consecutive life sentences.

Yup, plus his dad (also a gambler) had loaned the kid $600K to buy a house. With the housing bust, his dad called the loan and he had no cash.

Huh. If I was smarter I probably would have connected that from the facts.

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.
