  • Primary Talent Show

    The primary talent show is tonight, and unfortunately my wife has roped me into participating. We've had a difficult time deciding what we should do for our talent; the Mrs. wants to sing a song, while I want to do the Mormon rap. Here's the thing, I can't sing, and I think it's completely embarrassing when people who can't sing think it's a good idea to sing at church. So, I told her we're better of doing the Mormon rap because everybody will know we're joking and won't think we're making a serious attempt at singing. Of course, I can't get her to budge on doing the Mormon rap, at all.

    I think we've come up with a solution. We're going to sing three verses of Follow the Prophet, with two being original verses. That song is pretty easy to sing (it requires a range of about two notes), and it's short and painless. We'll sing one of the regular verses, and then two of our own with some amount of church appropriate humor. We wanted to make up our own verses for Hinckley and Monson. Here's the Hinckley verse we can up with last night:

    Hinckley was a prophet in the latter days
    he encouraged his people to follow in his ways
    he built many temples, the members shouted in glee
    the pulpit at conference is made from his tree
    chorus..

    We're having a little bit more trouble with Monson. I had a good one about Monson showing up in the Utah Jazz huddle, but my wife claimed it was more about the Jazz than Monson.

    Anyway, we want it to be somewhat funny so that people don't take us completely serious. Please feel free to contribute a verse or throw out some ideas!
    So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

    Monson is our prophet, uses passive voice;
    We should fight gay marriage and the pro-choice.
    In this bad recession, prudence is the way!
    That huge house in Alpine can wait another day.
    (chorus)

      Awesome!
      What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

        Good job Mrs. Funk. I doubt that will be topped.

            I'd offer one minor edit, just to emphasize Monson's speech patterns.

            Monson is our prophet, passive voice is used;
            Gay marriage was fought pro-choice is refused.

              It's true it does fit with his speech patterns better, but then it sounds wrong to the tune of Follow the Prophet because the meter is totally off.

                Are we singing the same tune? Both fit just fine.

                  Ok, I think we're going to crib the passive voice line. This is what we've got for Monson:

                  Monson is our prophet he uses passive voice
                  he wants all us members to make the right choice
                  in his stories he gives us good advice
                  knowing he's a Jazz fan is very nice
                  So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.
