Just got this email from my dad and it cracked me up:

So Austin City Limits rolls out two singer songwriters for their last show. The first guy, can't remember his name, is pretty nondescript, and then we get a 25 minute set from St. Vincent.

Wow, I was mesmerized. The stuff that was good was very good with some of that disconnected Jazz that is so difficult to sound good (National Anthem), and then there was a couple of songs that were so out there, I mean out there. It was like Frank Zappa had been reincarnated as a gorgeous female named Annie Clark. The way she stared as she sang was unsettling, but the strangest thing was that while all of her stuff was so vocally and musically disturbing.....she is just so darn good looking, and normal looking. Very interesting stuff!

In honor of the old man, I just put on Actor by St. Vincent.

Animal Collective and now Dan Deacon? This is too much. It's almost as if you're realizing that you can make music without strumming an acoustic guitar and playing a "tune."

Is this the year UD joins the 2000s? I don't know, but I sure am excited about the possibilities!

I never said you couldn't, just that it doesn't appeal much to me. But I am willing to try new things. Deacon's record is the most elaborate video game sound track I have ever heard. I do still prefer music with some structure, but AC has grown on me. I like what they do with vocal arrangements, among other things. Also, when something gets as much critical acclaim as that has, I feel I owe it to myself to figure out why.

You and I certainly define structure differently. For me you don't have to play a 4/4, have latent melody, use verse-chorus, or rely on any obvious hooks. But that's me. Though MPP has a lot of traditional structure (especially when compared to their other albums) -- there are even hooks! At it's core it's really just a pop album in the vein of classic Beach Boys stuff. It's just presented in a non-traditional package.

I like what they do with vocal arrangements, among other things.

Vocally I think MPP is one of the most thrilling albums I've ever heard. The harmonies are just so unique and innovative.

I agree with you, I didn't express myself very well. I suppose what I mean is that because I am a singer, I like songs. Does that make sense? Not all songs have the same structure, of course, but I go around singing Bon Iver all the time, for example. Not so much AC, though I like having it on in the back ground.
