  • And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?

Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

Maybe the BYU apologists should change the culture of violence that their athletic department has created. It seems like the players and fans are very guilty of checking their religion at the door, and then chastising other teams/fan bases for calling them out on their classless behavior.
    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Then again, who believes this is really just about a punch and a basketball coach throwing a fit? This has Hill’s hands all over it. . . .

Using The Punch for his own purposes was disingenuous. Something more is going on here . . . .

Hill and the Utes have suffered from a superiority complex since joining the Pac-12, and they’ve used every opportunity to kill the rivalry and to keep their foot on the Cougars’ throat while they struggle to reinvent themselves without a conference. If their positions were reversed, the Cougars would not be treating the Utes the same way. How quickly the Utes have forgotten what it was like when the Cougars owned them in athletics.
It seems obvious that this is very much about trying to marginalize BYU locally and beyond. It's not about rough play (krybaby was more than happy to mix it up in his day).

Since its backdoor entry into the PAC10, the uofutah has tried to set itself apart from the other Utah schools that it sees as threats. This makes sense; it wants to own Utah. Add its success in football and it has made significant progress. It's stopped playing ustate in football and basketball. It's cut out Weber in basketball. BYU stands in its way and the good doctor wants to kill it. Why wouldn't he? A bigger stadium, a bigger and better basketball facility, a better athletic program overall on a smaller budget, a much better academic standing, a couple of HD trucks, BYU still owns the state, and its fans refuse to bow to the PAC10 awesomeness. I guess he and the krybaby thought this was their best chance to put a nail in the coffin.

Then this shitstorm happens, which shouldn't have surprised anybody. They don't even understand the potential fanbase they are trying to capture or the state their institution represents. Wasn't it SU who said that krybaby was best positioned to take this step since he is an outsider? And the good doctor citing vocal uofutah fans saying they don't want to play BYU anymore? Is he serious, making decisions based on that? The smartest move is to embrace BYU and beat it at every chance possible. That's where clear separation becomes apparent.

To the extent that what happens on the east bench of SLC affects BYU, I rest happyily knowing that those jokers are in charge.

I absolutely believe he's trying to marginalize BYU. I actually respect the strategy-- too few people realize the extent to which success at BYU and Utah is a zero-sum game. Hill understands the state is not big enough for two thriving P5-level teams.

What I find funny is the idea that he is canceling the series to stave off a pending big 12 invite. Whether or not an invite is coming (and I still lean towards not), nothing Hill will have done will have had anything to do with it.

What stupid logic. As if cancelling one game per year is going to erase BYU from the map and make the rivalry disappear.

Yeah, so add stupid to lying and hypocritical. Those two are a real pair.

Which is ironic because they both lack a pair.

@tdlawton brings up pertinent points that should be addressed by Coach Rose, particularly the use of language that I'm sure LDS leadership would prefer not be used, especially on TV.

We're talking about the school that airbrushed away the tattoos of Raphael Araujo in their media photos. Image is an important aspect of their athletics teams. It's not that the Utes never use or hear "rough" language; Coach K certainly has a salty vocabulary, himself.

But for all the focus to be on Utah's decision to skip the game next year is telling half the story.

Here's the unstated - but obvious to anyone who can put 2 and 2 together - reasoning: playing BYU in the preseason doesn't help Utah as they prepare for PAC-12 conference play, and the threshold for game being undesirable is lower.

If anyone knows the unnecessary risks of over-the-top physical play, it's Larry Krystkowiak.

How does Coach K justify to the parents of highly prized recruits like Jacob Poeltl the need to play in the "Holy War", with the powder keg of emotion and associated unnecessary risk of injury?

                      Answer: he can't.

                      2. What is best for the basketball team.

I didn't watch the game, but reading about the BYU - Univ of San Francisco game last night, where defense was apparently in short supply and long range bombing carried the game for the Cougs, 102-92, I'm even more convinced that playing a team with that style is of minimal benefit to Utah, in preparing for PAC-12 play. There are no Paul Westhead-style Loyola Marymount teams in the PAC-12.

More strategically, knowing the intensity and potential for injuries from cheap shots in a powder keg rivalry with low basketball development dividends, how is Larry supposed to explain an injury from that kind of game to the parents of Jacob Poeltl?

The way things have gone since 2010, we've now been in the PAC-12 for 5 years, and BYU is still stuck in 2010... and still extremely angry about it.

This is not a good set of ingredients.
Yes, all those games uofutah plays before conference play are chosen because those patsies play a PAC10 style. And please, enough with the "powder keg" comments. Yeah, Utah is already losing to BYU in recruiting and BYU isn't even in a P5 conference. It is more about survival for Utah. Once BYU is in a P5 conference it's Utah that might be erased from the map.
