  • The lion-killing dentist

I am sure you are all aware of this story:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/30/us...imes&smtyp=cur

I hate it when idiots like this give hunting a bad name. I also hate it when social media is mobilized to destroy someone's life and career. But that seems to be world we live in now.

    Thoughts?

I blame the lions brother who orchestrated the hit so he could take over the pride land.

Interesting that this story and the Planned Parenthood story come out somewhat close in time and not many seem to care or be outraged at the callousness of PP yet seem to be outraged about the lion. Both are disgusting, but I am not sure how you can rectify being outraged about the lion and basically not caring about the PP thing.

Come on, man. Come clean and admit that you just stole that from your FB feed.

It is sobering how quickly someone's life can potentially be destroyed en masse by social media, even though this idiot brought a lot of it on himself. Given his prior conviction of a similar hunting offense, I don't feel terribly sorry for him, but there's no way this extent of backlash should be condoned.

This is one of the more dumb comparisons that is floating around FB lately. Does someone have to show their shock at the potentially illegal practices of PP before they can opine on the lion? Lame.

I am sure you are trying to be snarky, but quite honestly you can do better than this.

Obviously one doesn't have to show their outrage about one to express outrage about the other, but you can draw the conclusion that in the aggregate it is interesting to note that our society seems to be far more upset about the illegal killing of a lion that it does of the selling of human tissue and the callousness by which PP carried out their plan.

It seems like should be upset at the guide, not the hunter.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Maybe, but I am not to fond of big game hunting like this. It seems wasteful.

I think they'd make the same argument that hunters here make - - how much money have you put into wildlife conservation in Africa?

(apparently in this case, there is a whole pride of cubs that are now doomed but speaking to the general principle involved...)

Are you sure? How do you know that isn't the pinnacle of my witty response repertoire?

Yeah, the monetary donation response doesn't fly in cases like this. I am not sure it is ever a great response, but a terrible one in this case.

                            I don't "know," but I STRONGLY believe.

Not a hunter but having lived in Africa I'm familiar with how conservation efforts work and how big game hunting is a part of the equation. I don't think all the information has come out. It's very possible that this guy didn't do anything wrong and that all the responsibility rests on the guides. I may be wrong but I think it's unlikely that the hunter participated in luring the animal out of the preserve. The guides have spotters that most likely did the dirty work without the hunter's knowledge.
