  • Religious Narcissists

A thoughtful, well-considered description of some of the folks who can hijack religion. He also suggests the value of love in religion.

Narcissist has become a word without meaning. Based on the official definition, I would assume only small portion of population would qualify as a narcissist. Yet, I think I have never *not* heard someone describe their ex as a narcissist. The new definition of narcissist is someone who sometimes does or says rude things. Or better, someone who sometimes does or says things I don't like.

      Agreed.

Everyone's ex is now a narcissistic porn addict. Narcissism is a legit personality disorder, but you are right that the vast majority of these alleged narcissists do not have a personality disorder.

He could just substitute ideology for religion and broaden the reach of the message. I know many Mormons who are ideologically possessed where the narcissistic "ingredients" described are readily apparent. He nearly describes D&C 121 as the antidote. Humility is key. We definitely have the problem of interpreted revelation used as a solid platform from which to judge the world. It's definitely not unique to religion, substitute wokeness for religiosity and it's the same narcissistic paradigm used as a cudgel.

I understand where you are coming from, but this guy is not using the term casually. He's a well-respected, published clinician, and he's not saying hordes of people have NPD.

            Did you watch the video?

Didn't care enough to watch the video. I just wanted to complain about the word narcissist. Am I gaslighting you right now??

Just kidding. What he says in the video should be common sense. It's too bad everyone doesn't have that perspective. It's tricky with religion where you think absolute truth is involved. If absolute truth about God and religion exists, then it would be pretty important. You might even sound like a narcissist if you believed it strong enough and were serious about helping others believe and conform to it. But then if you did have absolute truth about God, maybe you *should* take it seriously enough that you would be perceived as a narcissist by others.

These types of discussions now seem so quaint and needless. We are facing a religion much more dangerous than Christianity--socialism. Indeed, religion may be what ultimately is saving us from the abyss. Religion and corporations.

Weird convergence with SU and Ezra Benson going on here. Which alternative timeline is this?

                      Maxine!

One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.

AOC said two days ago that capitalism is "irredeemable." So the question now becomes what is a world like without capitalism? I have heard many times that capitalism is evil, a dirty word. Okay. So what is the world like without it? We have a lot of examples, don't we.

This is how to respond to leftist fantasies. Okay, what will happen if suddenly there are no capitalism or fossil fuels? What would the world be?

I'm an anyone-but-Trump supporter... that's the bar for me in 2020. If that is BS or the other old white guy or Warren or the lei-wearing Gabbard or whoever, I'm in.

Your redefinition of "socialism" is a fun game you like to play, which you then use as a cudgel indiscriminately. As a student of your posts and a great admirer, I expect more nuance from you.
