  • Rampant anti-semitism on the left

This reckoning on the left is long overdue. Ant-Semitism has wrecked the women's march in New York, the British labor party, etc. It goes on and on.

Don’t be soft in the head. That is not even worthy of debate. Anti-semitism on the right is vile. But it’s clearly more numerous and insidious on the left. Anti-semitism on the right would have no traction—the province of neo-nazi skinhead nuts who are small in number—if the mainstream media did not love to give them a platform. The problem with anti-semitism on the left is that it’s been tolerated even mainstreamed by the democrats, labor party, women’s march in New York, etc. The mitigating factor for Ilham Omar is that she’s received confusing mixed messages from her party and other constituents. Only now, is the left doing anything to stem this disgrace. Actually, the outside neo-Nazis the right is very supportive of Jews and Israel, as you of all people should know.

Is this because of her questioning AIPAC? I find those questions legitimate- that's a lobby that's had a profound effect on American foreign policy for decades.

No. It’s not because she has criticized AIPAC. Maybe now that almost the entire Democratic Party has condemned her comments as bigotry you should figure out what’s going on before writing anything more.

I know you are not saying this, but the bolded makes it seem as if you are conflating anti-semitism with objection to Israeli policy. Reasonable people can differ about if Israeli policy is correct/right/etc.

Criticism of Israel turns into antisemitism when tropes are deployed such as American support for Israel is bought with Jewish money, AIPC and Israel conspire with American Jews to gain American support for Israel, and so on. These are things that fascists and other antisemites have said for decades. This kind of talk can turn deadly when people are looking for a scape goat for their misfortunes. This really isn’t complicated. Nor does anyone disagree that Ilhan Omar’s and other leftists’ comments such as these are antisemitic. Some say that the reason antismeitism on the left is tolerated is because many on the left don’t regard Jews as sufficiently disadvantaged to deserve to be protected from bigotry.

Moreover, it isn’t tue that money is a factor here. Americans have plenty of good substantive reasons to support Isreal that are pragmatic and cultural. For one thing, Israel’s democracy isn’t perfect, but it’s a democracy, and Muslims are freer there than anywhere else in the Middle East. AIPAC is entitled to lobby for its interest, like the cardboard box industry, and spends less money doing so.

How is that different than Kevin McCarthy in his tweet that was quoted in the article saying the money from rich Jewish people like Soros, Steyer, Bloomberg "buy" elections in the US? He's not extreme. He's mainstream in the GOP today. Just a coincidence he only mentioned rich donors who happen to be Jewish?

Mccarthy’s tweet is anti Semitic. I am not a Republican. But this problem is more prevalent among democrats.

"Everything I have heard from her leads me to conclude that she dislikes Aipac because [...] she does not really believe the Jewish people have a right to an independent state in their ancestral homeland."

Friedman does not cite any evidence to support this assertion... other than she supports BDS?! Give me a break.

Friedman is overreaching here, as is the Dem Congressional leadership, because they are trying to make this about religion instead of about corruption in government (ours and Israel's).

And Friedman and the Dems (and perhaps you?) are doing this for disingenuous reasons. What a sham. You should be ashamed for piling on.
