While I've always thought that the gift of tongues refers to learning a foreign language for preaching the Gospel, I stumbled across this page today, showing that most Pentecostals engaging in it use phonemes from their native languages in patterns that suggest words, predominated, globally, by the /a/ phoneme. http://charlesdailey.net/TonguesHolton.html

After reading the article, and gone down the rabbit hole of searching for "glossalalia" on YouTube, I am strongly reminded of my time in the MTC. My district decided that rather than tell people we were going to a stateside mission, we'd say we were going somewhere exotic, so we chose Mongolia, and proceeded to make clicking and popping noises to demonstrate the language we were learning. Plenty of fun, until a smartass sister heard about us, tracked us down, and introduced us to her companion, who was from Mongolia. She laughed, and even taught us some Mongolian, which, come to think of it, probably translated to "I am a dumbass."
