It has historically been twice per year damnit.

I appreciate your sympathy and your prayers for me.

Ladyfolk are not supposed to attend priesthood meeting, anyway. So no need to reconsider your status.

Progressives believe LDS women should be endowed with the priesthood power, my friend.
"Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

Clearly he's still in the closet.

You forgot the porn lecture and the store-brand rootbeer floats.

I'll admit to being bummed they went to once per year, mostly because it's an excuse for me and my oldest to hit Five Guys without feeling guilty that the rest of the brood isn't in tow. Then we get ice cream afterwards. Since MJ insists on watching the women's session at my house and inviting over half the ward, maybe I'll use that excuse to take my two boys out while the women feast on finger foods during thier session.

my son and I always hit 5 guys as well. but part of the tradition is to leave before the final song and prayer getting there before the rush and eating while there is a line out the door of dudes in shirts and ties who won't eat for another 45 minutes.

Pretty sure that will never happen. But I look forward to the next conference now, just for the theatrics from the gay dude that are sure to follow.

What is unfortunate though is that the most hateful, divisive, and hardline individual in the Quorum of the 12 is now 1st counselor. Oaks talk from the last conference was incredibly divisive. He has consistently been hostile towards both LGBTQ and women.

The fact that Nelson was willing to put that person as his first counselor isn't a great indicator that the already snails pace of progress in the church will continue. It may halt all together and it may even regress at this point.
I don't think having Oaks as a counselor will do anything to change policy or the course of whatever was going to take place. I get that it might LOOK like the LDS church has put a "hardliner" in a position of power, but I'm guessing that very few meaningful decisions get made without the input and agreement of all of the First Presidency and Q12. He's been a part of that, and will continue to be a part of that. So it really is no different than it has been.

This also means, to me at least, that the new guys will ultimately be more influential in potentially tipping any balance one way or another or advancing new ideas. Because they'll be the guys with NEW ideas - even though I anticipate they'll just go with the flow initially while they are getting their bearings.

No line in Texas. We go before the meeting and usually there’s one or two small groups in white shirts and ties. I think it freaks out the employees when they see 3-4 small groups wearing the same thing on a random Saturday night.

You sure throw around the word "hateful" a lot.

Have you ever considered that your own attitude is "hateful"?

As has been the problem or benefit for years, depending upon your perspective, the Church's bald, geriatric white men are well-represented and that of their perspectives. I agree that "Hateful" is thrown around too frequently, but "insensitive" or "unsensitized" by virtue of the predominance of bald, old white men is probably a better description. I don't know why mpfunk believes there is intentional desire to harm gays, but the impact such policies have upon members seems to be lost upon the upper level administrators.

                            • Uchtdorf strongly conveys empathy and a desire to listen. Oaks may very well be empathetic and a skilled listener too, but he doesn't leave that impression. He leaves the impression that talking to him is like talking to someone who is looking to find what's wrong in what you said, that his mind was made up before you even spoke, and that you're about to be lectured about the HOI and how you should talk to your SP or Bishop because "there is an order in the Church."

In short, Oaks leaves the impression that he is tone deaf, even if he isn't.
We all trust our own unorthodoxies.

I agree, from his GC presentations. That said, I had occasion to attend a fairly intimate devotional by President Oaks with a small body of Saints in a remote part of the world. He was very engaging and caring, making sure to mingle among the attendees, greeting them all in person. His remarks were devoid of the standard legalistic approach I normally see in GC. In a way, I was like, "What the hell?"
                                Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."
