Going into the season I would have guessed that we'd miss Amy Boswell the most, but I think it's Santiago. The only front row player that really consistently plays back row rotations is Jones-Perry (Stetler a bit too). They could do less of that, but she does give BYU a 3m line attack. Interestingly, the big change they made on Thursday in the 3rd set was to replace McKenna Miller with Lacy Haddock. One advantage of Haddock is she's a better passer; she gave BYU a front court player that could effectively dig short stuff.
Destroyed Pacific today (similar quality as St. Mary's team ... probably a bit better ... top 150 instead of top 200). Passed much better, but Pacific didn't serve nearly as well as St. Mary's. I thought Martindale, in particular, passed well today.

Anybody watch the Portland game last night, or going to watch the Gonzaga game tomorrow night?

"Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

Yes and I will go tomorrow too. They are playing really well, but Portland was costly. Taylen Ballard hurt her knee. No idea how long she'll be out. Tough loss; Haddock will replace her, and she's solid but it's a big loss in height and blocking prowess.

You confused me when you said Portland was costly. At first I thought you meant it was a loss, but I thought I'd seen some graphic on Twitter showing BYU won in three sets. Then I noticed the following sentence about the injury. Bummer.
"I think it was King Benjamin who said 'you sorry ass shitbags who have no skills that the market values also have an obligation to have the attitude that if one day you do in fact win the PowerBall Lottery that you will then impart of your substance to those without.'"

Yeah, you're right ... that was confusing if you don't follow the team. Yeah, they absolutely crushed crushed them. Portland's ok. Probably an 80-120 ranked team, but BYU out served, out passed, out blocked, and out hit them.

Unfortunately, the BYU women are getting snubbed by the computers in RPI. Consider the current RPI rankings:

              • BYU is the only 1-loss team not in the top 5. Heck, they're not even in the top 15.
              • BYU has defeated two teams currently in the top 25.
              • BYU has defeated three ranked teams at the time of playing, two are still in the top 25.
              • BYU defeated Utah, at Utah. Utah is currently ranked 10, with 3 losses.
              • BYU's only loss is to a team in the current top 25.

Obviously, RPI is stupid (but will matter), and it's just as stupid for volleyball as it is for other sports (basketball). I won't rehash why it's so stupid. I did a simple statistical model (margin of victory is done by the set margin not the point margin as one would do in football) and BYU is basically 6-10 range depending on how you handle a few things in the model .

Any word on the injury you mentioned that occurred in the Portland match?

No. She was on the sideline during Gonzaga match and was walking around and or standing during parts of the match. Had a brace on.

I would also add that it hurts BYU that the WCC is down this year. It's normally a 3-5 bid league. It's often had 4 teams in the top-25 or near the top 25. It's actually a pretty good volleyball league. Obviously not as good as the Big 12, big 10, or the PAC 12. Still, BYU's usually not hurt by league play. This year is a problem. It's a two bid league.

Ballard's injury looked like an MCL injury to me. When she landed on her left foot, the knee buckled inward (I'll defer to the talents of hostile as to whether that actually means anything). I doubt it was a complete tear.

I haven't watched the team play much since early in the season, but I watched the Portland and Gonzaga games, and I'm stoked about the two middle blockers we have stepping in for Boswell and Howard-Young/Young-Howard (can't remember which order).

Jones-Perry was solid last year, but her ascent is meteoric. Miller struck the ball well last weekend. My daughter is Jonesing to go to a game soon, but we don't play east of Provo very often.

The women volleyballers are rolling along, whereas the women soccer team is not. I imagine the Pepperdine game was fun to watch, right?

Don't really need the W in front of it; We can just be #VolleyballSchool (although the men's team is going to be a little down this year given who they lost).
