  • Women's Volleyball 2017

Started 3-0 this weekend, including a 3-1 win over ranked Ohio State.

Veronica Jones-Perry looks like a completely new player.she played Opp, And OH at different times and had some monster kills from the back row. New faces include a DS JC transfer who played well during her 2.5 rotations (Martindale?), Cosy Burnett as a MB, and freshman Kennedy Redding as a MB. Lacy Haddock hurt her knee over the weekend. Denelle Sterler was hit and cold filling in against Ohio State.

The sole bright spot for BYU is Wally's favorite team, Women's Volleyball.

BYU defeated Nevada 3-0 after having defeated the Wahine the night before.

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

Went to the first homestand; actually really like the lineup and it wouldn't surprise me to see this team make a deep run in the tourney. Well, I should say I really like the line-up when they keep Jones-Perry on the left-side. I didn't like the dynamic as near as much when they tried run her as the opposite. She is just so much more comfortable and dynamic as a normal outside hitter

I like her there as well. But they served to the middle quite a bit recently.

Burnett had a great statistical game last night against Nevada. I'm pleasantly surprised with her performance in the middle. I noticed Robins-Hardy was setting last night. The Haddock who sets had a rough first few matches. I wonder if the move to R-H was so she could play in front of her home fans or if Haddock is getting a break to regroup. I think this happened a few times last year.

Perhaps others watched it, but the ladies were upset by Baylor, who came in I believe unranked. Pelagius, did you see what led to their downfall?

Nope, I'm not interested enough in women's volleyball to try to catch the away games. I do like attending them in the SFH. I probably go to 2/3 of the home matches, and I do get season tickets.

None of the games in Hawaii were available on TV.

So BYU finally beats Utah at something. In SLC, no less. Booyah!

                    Wally should be proud.

Nice 3-1 win for BYU over 17th ranked San Diego at San Diego:

                      http://www.wccsports.com/gamecenter/...93017-usd.html

More importantly it looks like the team has found an opposite: Taylen Ballard. Really BYU is running all the pin hitters at opposite but her front line rotation is like 2 at opposite and 1 at outside. So she gets more time at opposite than anyone else. She's a very good blocker, and over the past couple of weeks she's gotten a lot better (more comfortable?) offensively. She had 9 kills and hit 400 against a good San Diego team yesterday. Probably more importantly, she and Kennedy Redding really frustrated the San Diego pin hitters when they could put on a double block (which was frequent).

Really bullish about this team making a deeper run than the sweet 16.

I took my daughters down for the match yesterday. General admission seating, so we were second row up and just offset from the net.

USD is a solid team (currently ranked #17 before yesterday's match; NCAA tournament qualifiers 19 of the last 21 seasons), and I think it was a good chance for the Cougars to have some quality competition and see where they stand. The first three sets were really close, and all were exciting. It was nice to see the Cougars take charge in the fourth set and put the match away.

I'm with you on being bullish about the team. I don't know if they're in that Florida/Penn State/Texas/Stanford tier, but they are in that next cut at the very least.

The five setter with with St. Mary's last night was interesting. St Mary's is not a good team; last night was roughly equivalent to putting away RPI 150-200 team with free throws in the last minute to win by 4-5 points. BYU simply shouldn't struggle against a team in that tier, but St. Mary's exposed and pretty effectively exploited BYU's biggest (and probably only significant) weakness. In the back row, Mary Lake (libero) is covering up for defensive passing problems. St. Mary's was really effective at keeping their serve away from Lake. Everybody outside of Mary Lake struggled with their passing. For example, St. Mary's was effectively placing relative short serves that forced outside hitters to make a pass. BYU really struggle with that. I imagine other teams are going to copy this strategy; doubt many teams will be able to do it consistently, but I still think BYU's going to have to adjust.

My wife agrees with you. She's the VB expert in the family. I enjoy watching, but don't have the knowledge to technically break down what we're doing in an X's and O's type of way. I just see that we shank a lot of balls on the first touch or overpass or can't get a good pass to the setter. I'm not sure why. I sometimes wonder if we'd be better off not letting our hitters play in the back row. Maybe give any libero not named Mary Lake a regular jersey and then sub them in back row in a regular rotation. Obviously that takes out our ability to attack effectively from behind the 10 ft line, but maybe that's a reasonable tradeoff for bad passing.

Also, why are so many of our home games on the W.tv? Don't we have an HD truck, and shiny new TV building, and the finest crew of student production assistants in the known universe? We spent all these millions of dollars for tier 1 TV production capabilities, and a big chunk of our home games get a grainy laptop stream.

Well, they already play 2 defensive specialists in every rotation: Mary Lake + Moser or Mary Lake + Martindale. Moser and Martindale are the back-up liberos. Both are going to have to pass well for the avoid Mary Lake strategy not to work. I think it really hurts not having Santiago as a DS. Going into the season I would have guessed that we'd miss Amy Boswell the most, but I think it's Santiago. The only front row player that really consistently plays back row rotations is Jones-Perry (Stetler a bit too). They could do less of that, but she does give BYU a 3m line attack. Interestingly, the big change they made on Thursday in the 3rd set was to replace McKenna Miller with Lacy Haddock. One advantage of Haddock is she's a better passer; she gave BYU a front court player that could effectively dig short stuff.
