It's nice to play a team with worse defense than BYU.

I will say that while it seems Schroyer has really helped the defense come back to respectability, I'm starting to wonder if his philosophy is not somehow holding down the offense. #91 in efficiency for the season just seems a lot lower than it should be. Then again, maybe it's just inexperienced players still learning how to be good at both at the same time.
There were a few encouraging aspects about the game last night (in addition to the win). First, they seemed to have a lot more action off of the screens near the 3-point line. Often, it has seemed as though the screens serve no purpose - the screen is set, the ball handler chooses whether or not to use the screen, then they hand the ball off to someone else coming around the perimeter. Last night, they seemed to use the screen to occupy both defenders at the arc while the screener rolled to the basket, receiving the ball and either scoring or dumping it off to someone at the basket when the backside help defender came over.
Second, there seemed to be a lot less hesitancy to shoot for both TJ and Seljaas - even after a few misses. They both need to be willing and ready to take (and make) open shots from distance.
There is still a lot of progress to be made. For example, Yoeli should not be shooting from 3 with lots of time on the clock. Probably not even with little time on the clock. Also, there was some pretty suspect defensive play - especially in the first half. I thought the officials did a pretty good job overall, though there were a few calls that seemed borderline - one on Hardnett and another I think on Dastrup. I probably just didn't have good enough camera angles to see what caused the fouls to be called.

That efficiency is mostly tied to rebounding, or lack of offensive rebounding, and turnovers. Those factors are holding the efficiency down. And they make sense, if you lose offensive opportunities by turn over the ball, you'll be less efficient. If you can get offensive rebounds, you'll lose offensive opportunities.

Neither San Francisco's record this season (14-12) nor its performance in conference (6-7) should be much cause for concern. They have, however, shown capable of beating at least one good team - Nevada (currently top 15 in RPI). They average only 68.3 points per game and allow 67.8. In their first tussle with the Cougs this season, the Dons gave up just over their average and scored below average, losing 69-59.
Who's going to be there in person to rise and shout?

San Fran forcing lots of turnovers and offensive fouls. Guys need to pull their heads out and be under control with their bodies and passing.

So glad the government is funded so I had to miss this game.
Well that was more drama than it should have been. Good to get the win.
I can’t wait until Heath leaves. I hate his offense. Coach shouldn’t have given him the reins and should take them back. Give me Nashif back any day.
A win was looking pretty unlikely when they went down 7. A lot had to go right for the comeback. Loved Elijah's pure three as regulation was winding down.
That said, they should never have had to come back from behind. They were so sloppy with the ball (season high in turnovers) and body control (multiple offe d4ive fouls). Really disappointed in the poor execution for most of the gane.

BYU's conference record at this point in the season: 9-5
2017: 9-5
2016: 10-4
2015: 9-5
2014: 9-5
2013: 9-4 (fewer games because Pacific wasn't in the conference)
2012: 10-3
So..., it doesn't appear that BYU's woes were any better under Nashif than they are under Schroyer.
But without Schroyer, our defense would go back to being abysmal.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf
Agreed.
I attended the game with my son. We gave up 19 pts off turnovers in the first half. I was dead from a sleep deficit and the game was boring and frustrating so we bailed and went home. I turned on the TV to see us down 7 and on an 8-minute stretch with zero FGs. We were down by 6 and had just fouled with 30 seconds left so I turned it off and had a nap. Woke up and watched the comeback on the DVR.
That was an ugly, sloppy game. No excuse to be playing like that at this point in the season. Typical Dave Rose team. Enough talent to beat anyone on a given night, but always sufficiently poorly coached that we can to lose to the worst teams on a given night.

Rose's teams traditionally have been very good about not turning the ball over too much. But the last couple of seasons, not so much. Then again, these have been his two least experienced teams, so that may have something to do with it. I think TO's drive him nuts though. It's probably one of the main reasons he's had a short leash on Dastrup who can be particularly careless about it, despite his obvious raw talent.
This year I'd love for the WCC to suddenly do what every other conference sometimes does at tournament time and have the first two teams lose in the first round.
so that LMU can get the auto bid?
