Never thought about it, but I guess you're right -- Buffalo is better than Bakersfield too.

I'd rather have a discussion with Scandal about Costco. At least he is nuanced.

Your pool looks so nice. How big is it? We are putting in a pool. Our original dig date was November 23, but they had an opening to move us up to October 18, so we took it and the fun is about to begin for us. We signed back in July--that is how busy they are that they could not even start until now. Anyhow I am team rectangle all the way. My hubby wanted jelly bean, but the company/designer we went through just got me and came up with a great design. Nothing fancy. But it will have a water feature as well as a spill over from the spa, a Cabo deck, and we put the stairs at a diagonal so that it makes more room for me to do laps. I mean they will be short laps--only 38 feet long--but with stairs not taking up the middle, I can do flip turns at both ends. I wish I had convinced hubby to do this before pools were so popular and prices went up. Alas, I am just happy he said yes at all! And I am happy that hubby quickly relented on jelly bean when the designer explained that the modern trend is rectangle/geometric shapes.

Ours is 42 feet long by 16 feet wide. I was just looking at my bay trees the other day and thinking “geez, those sure haven’t grown much in 3 years”. Now seeing this pic, I realize they have actually grown quite a bit.

Cool. Similar to our pool size. 38 by 12 in parts and 38 by 16 in others. Our spa is 8 by 8 and we got a water feature at the end. Our yard is pie shape, not huge, but 1/3 acre ish and so we have the basketball court on one side with our fruit trees, grass in the middle, and the pool on the other side of the house.

Your trees look good. After three years, any regrets on getting a pool?

No regrets on getting a pool. Love the shape. Love the deep end (I would definitely get a deep end with your kids all being older. You'll use it way more than the cabo deck. Probably some things I would do differently though:

                        1) Make a jumping platform at least 5-6' up. We have a couple of low places for jumping, but that's apparently not good enough for anyone over 10. Now the kids jump from the top of the stair wall, and they have to clear the lower jumping platform. It's an easy enough jump, but any sort of slip and they would be landing on the platform below. So probably when we drain the pool next summer (That will be 4 years, so we're due) we're going to build out the upper platform to take it right to the edge of the water. If you don't have a deep end, maybe this isn't an issue.

                        2) Don't love our intellichem system, which automatically tests the water and adds liquid chlorine/muriatic acid as needed. We got this at the recommendation of a co worker, who said she doesn't need a pool guy because this handles it all. And it is great when it works. For the first couple of seasons we had zero problems, but the last two seasons we've had lots of parts go bad. Replacing the parts is pretty easy, and not particularly expensive. But it has taken us a LOT of trial and error to diagnose issues and know what needs to be replaced (especially because it's a relatively new system, so most pool companies don't know how to address the issue, and there isn't a ton of info online). We are fairly proficient now (and I credit Mrs. D, who has really taken the lead in being an intellichem expert--she could probably start a consulting company on these systems) but it has been a bit of a pain to get there.

                        3) Love the in-floor cleaning. We have had zero problems with it, with the exception of a rock getting stuck in one of the heads on a single occation. But it has a lifetime warranty, so the company came right out and fixed it the next day. Makes keeping the pool clean very easy.

                        4) We love the LED lighting, and are glad we didn't go old school with a single light down in the deep end. The colored lights make night swimming fun and also provide a nice ambiance in the backyard. We do regret not getting the system where you can control the lights/colors from your phone. It was a couple thousand and we were trying to keep on a budget back when we built. In retrospect, I wish I had splurged, as the system that comes standard is a bit of a pain to use accurately (it involves physically toggling the switch up and down a certain number of times to get specific colors/themes).

Pools are great and I’m glad we have one but ours is older (20ish years) and in need of an upgrade at some point. I think when we start having grandkids we might reso the backyard a bit and I’d love to add in led lights.

i do love our salt water system. The chemicals are easy to maintain. I’ve never had a pool company come out to test it and I only use the cheap chemical testing kits from Amazon.

The LED lights are awesome. On 4th of July we have the pool alternating between red and white with the spa staying blue-- very American flagish. We watched Jaws from the pool last summer, and I turned the pool to glowing red while we watched. We hosted a BYU backyard watch party for the USU game, and had the pool lights and spa lights switching between blue and white. Kinda lame, but I like toying with it. When we sit on our back porch and have the pool lights on, it's relaxing to pick a color and have it permeate that side of the yard.

                            • We did rectangle with an automatic cover that goes over the pool and spa. This saves a ton on cleaning and gives piece of mind when small kids are around. We don't have a fence around our pool (and don't need one since we have the cover). We have the colored led lights that you can control with the phone app. The app, IMO, sucks so I just integrated it into my home automation system (home assistant based) and added a little programming. For example, on the 4th of July it sets the lights to red/white/blue, green/red for christmas, etc. I also have a party mode that changes to different colors fairly rapidly. The grandkids love that.

I was told that the in-floor cleaning just blows the dirt around so we have the robot vacuum cleaner. It is powerful enough to pick up a lot of sand and leaves. These robots, since they are all mechanical, require replacing parts on a regular basis. Once a year I get the "overhaul" kit and rebuild it for the new summer season.

I do the old school "check the chemistry of the pool with the paper strip" or take in a sample to Leslie's to test. I have been thinking about getting something like this, however: https://waterguru.com/product/waterguru-sense/ With the cover the pool is rather low maintenance since it keeps the leaves and rain out so the chemistry stays rather stable.
