If you are obsessed with moral outrage, there is something wrong with you.

    http://reason.com/blog/2017/03/01/mo...s-self-serving

When people publicly rage about perceived injustices that don't affect them personally, we tend to assume this expression is rooted in altruism—a "disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others." But new research suggests that professing such third-party concern—what social scientists refer to as "moral outrage"—is often a function of self-interest, wielded to assuage feelings of personal culpability for societal harms or reinforce (to the self and others) one's own status as a Very Good Person.

I have a co-worker who was infamous among online law school communities when I was in law school. His is caucasion, but was adopted in high school by his latino stepfather. He applied to several top-15 law schools as a minority and was accepted to all but the Harvard, Yale, and Stanford. On a discussion board, he started bragging about his racial fraud, and the dean of admissions at Texas was able to figure out his identity based on info he posted online. The dean notified all schools he applied to and all but one pulled their offers of admission. As a 1L, his Con Law professor was late getting grades back to the class, and this guy lambasted his professor via email and copied his entire class. It went viral, and people started parody blogs dedicated to this guy.

At any rate, he's a weird dude, but works his ass off, and he's now in a position to be a very well paid manager in a non-legal position (landman, which are basically like oil and gas realtors). His name is mostly absent from the internet these days. Morale of the story: there is redemption from a viral online assault.

          Seems about right.

I am quoting this post from HFN in another thread because it fits so well within the theme of this thread:

It is this huge story, all over the interwebs, hashtags and roasting twitter accounts set up to blast how awful United is. Yet today their planes are full and nothing changed. In a month their planes will still be full and prices high for summer. Soon they'll offer some halfassed apology and everyone will move on. The rest of the airlines will realize they can treat people worse than they already do because nothing really happens.

We live in a time of a great ability to be offended and outraged, but not so much ability to do anything about it. The following through part is hard, rather than get involved civically because I disagree with Trump I'll just throw a few snarky #notmypresident tweets out. Rather than cancel my flight on United and not go or pay more to a different airline I'll retweet a funny meme about how bad their service is. If I inconvenience myself by really getting involved I won't have time for Netflix binging and exploring my favorite subreddits. What a time to be alive!
Yes, the UAL thing is red meat for those addicted to outrage porn. Got a chuckle at this today:

I imagine UAL will never do that again. In the meantime, I am enjoying the reactions on social media. Twitter has been awesome yesterday and today.

              Ha! That is good.

The thing about United is, while they should have handled it better, they were well within their rights and people get bumped all the time, although most are voluntary. It's no different than the guy that freaks out at the gate counter. United just needs to logistically handle their crew teams better and they'll be fine.

I fly United a lot, probably more than anyone on this board. I've had flights get cancelled because of weather or plane malfunction. I've had a couple delayed for an hour or two because the pilot and crew hadn't arrived yet. I've seen people take $500 to be voluntarily bumped and I've seen people get involuntarily bumped, and compensated for being bumped. It's the name of the game when flying.

If we want to force airlines to not be able to overbook, then we have to be ready for higher prices and less full planes. Otherwise, people should plan ahead and have contingency plans in place for when they are bumped.

Of course, I've never been bumped since I have status on United and Delta

While it is well within the law for them to bump people they handled it totally wrong. What a bunch of dummies. What a PR nightmare. Maybe it is not too late to drop the name "United" and use "Continental" instead? The upside of this is that I am expecting some cheap flights on United soon and they may not have a problem with overbooking for a while. I suspect a lot of airlines will be using this as a case study on what not to do. United's market cap has taken a good hit today. They would have been much better off offering more money than they had to rather than getting all this bad PR.

I have been bumped before... well, I took the bump money and the free hotel because I wasn't in a big hurry. It was on the outgoing leg of my trip so I really didn't need the hotel but I told them I didn't feel like driving home and back the next morning. I also asked them to bump me up to first class on the morning flight if they had a seat and they did. It was totally worth all the pain and suffering I went through in getting bumped.

I'm not sure a one day hit to their market cap really matters. Like HFNW said, this will all be forgotten in a couple days and the stock price will fix itself. This isn't a long term hit to future cash flows.

Yeah, I am guessing this... and the airlines outlawing smartphones and other recording devices on planes for "safety" reasons:
