I'm being cynical because I'm tired of trying to see the best in something, always spinning it for the benefit of the doubt. I now just doubt it all. These seem like old men left to their own devices, and while they certainly are good human beings, there looks to be no still, small voice whispering to them. Because, according to you, it can only happen, if and when, but you have yet to see when that if has been--if at all--during your lifetime. The only Apostles with the balls to make predictions about the future were the ones rending their garments about the Civil Rights Movement and Communism, and they were flat-out wrong, and poisoned the Church's political culture for generations.
I'm taking a long break from the Church. I just can't take the duplicity anymore. "We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for their parents' homosexuality." "If you don't do your hometeaching, we're going to take your temple recommend." "It's hard for the learnéd man to get into heaven."
What ultimately did me in? My wife has an 8-9 y/o primary class. There is a white kid in there who just sucks. Super hyper. Smart ass. Won't stop fucking talking about Star Wars ever. He gets going and makes a really smart black kid hyper. The primary presidency calls my wife Friday night and tells her that they are sending the man-child, racist husband of the Primary 1st counselor into my wife's class to "sit with" the black kid. She tells them, "I'm not comfortable with Brother Man-Child in my class. I don't want him in there either." They tell her, "The Lord wants him in there." She gets off the phone, in tears, and tells me what they've done. I tell her to just resign her calling. She doesn't want to because she doesn't want the black kid to be subjected to these racist assholes in charge of the primary. So, she waits, and then calls the primary president back, "Brother Man-Child is not welcome in my class. I've heard comments he's made about black people before, and I will not allow him in my classroom." "It's not up to you, Sister wuap." "Sister Primary President, maybe you don't understand me." "Maybe you don't understand me. I'm the Primary President and you can't control that boy, and Sister white kid's mom wants something done." "Putting Brother Man-Child in my class is not an inspired decision." <slams phone down>
On Sunday, Brother Man-Child did not go to my wife's class, neither did the white kid. His mom told my wife that she needed to trust in the Lord. So, JL, I'm done. Maybe my faith isn't sustainable. Mock me. Call my faith immature, that I'm seeking a sign.
Remember that scene in The Wire when Cutty yells at Michael?
