Originally posted by Moliere View PostI'm no lawyer, but this certainly seems like the issue. After reading a bit about it, they don't have streaming contracts in place. They seem to rip the movie to a server and then "sell" (or rent) the movie to customers who "sell" it back. It shouldn't matter if they have 100 copies of the movie/show in some vault somewhere.
Yeah, so apparently vidangel tried to negotiate with "Hollywood" and got nowhere. So now, vidangel and its lawyers think the courts will force Hollywood to do business with them? I'm no IP lawyer, but I'm guessing the hangup is the artistic rights holders and "Hollywood's" unwillingness to profit from artistically-altered media based on some sell-then-repurchase technicality which almost certainly violates the spirit and intent of any contracts between the movie companies and the writers/directors.

I think I've posted this before, but Mrs. D was employed with CleanFlicks corporate back when it was being sued by "Hollywood". When we first heard about the lawsuit, we assumed it was on the issue of piracy/copyright infringement. This was our assumption because, despite CleanFlicks' frequent and repeated statements on its website it (CF) owned a retail-purchased copy for each edited copy it rented out, this was absolutely not the case. Mrs. D became aware of this within hours of starting her job there, and we immediately began wondering when--not if--the company would collapse. When we learned that the case was on the basis of artistic rights, we chuckled at the thought of Hollywood pursuing a much more difficult avenue when there was a slam-dunk piracy case for the taking. When the ruling came down and I read the order, it became clear to me that Hollywood wasn't just interested in shutting down CleanFlicks, but that it wanted some legal precedent to wield on this issue moving forward. I presume that it is with this precedent in hand that Hollywood continues (rightfully, of course) to ignore VidAngel's demands for a business relationship.
As I read that blog post, I couldn't help but chuckle at just how exasperated VidAngel seems to be that Hollywood has the audacity to ignore its requests to do business.

Here's an email they sent to those who have registered on the site (with light filtering):
Hi there and thanks for using VidAngel,
We need your help! We love our VidAngel fans and are honored to be able to provide a filtering service that gives you the control to enjoy great entertainment with your whole family.
You may have heard that Disney, Warner Bros., Twentieth Century Fox, and Lucasfilm are asking a court to shut down VidAngel. We believe we are legal in every way, but we need your help. If we can prove to the judge that VidAngel provides a public benefit, the chances become much lower that we will have to shut down until we can prove our case at trial.
Here's how you can help:
1. Before this Friday, write a VidAngel testimonial answering the following questions and send it to welovevidangel@vidangel.com:
* How important is movie filtering for you and your family, and why?
* Are there movies you wouldn't watch if VidAngel filtering didn't exist?
* Do the studios make a fair argument when they say that if you object to the content of a movie, you simply shouldn't watch it? Please explain.
2. Donate to save filtering here <https://www.vidangel.com/donate>
3. Sign the petition at SaveFiltering.com <http://savefiltering.nationbuilder.com/>
And most importantly, keep enjoying VidAngel movies! We are sincerely grateful for the incredible support we have received from you. We hear wonderful stories all the time of how VidAngel has benefited lives. Please help the fight by sharing your stories with us and the court BEFORE THIS FRIDAY.
We will not give up!
Yours truly,
Team VidAngel"I think it was King Benjamin who said 'you sorry ass shitbags who have no skills that the market values also have an obligation to have the attitude that if one day you do in fact win the PowerBall Lottery that you will then impart of your substance to those without.'"

VidAngel should just create and sell data files that can be used with movies that you bit torrent off the internet. They could submit some patches to popular video players that read their data files and plays these downloaded movies with edits applied to them on the fly during playback. They would then only be selling interesting data files and not even have to touch the movies. If they where smart they would create some easy-to-use movie editing software that captures the data for these interesting data files so it could then be crowd sourced. Then if hollywood threaten them with legal action they could "release the genie from the bottle" by opening sourcing the video editing software to all the internet to use. I could imagine that folks could come up with some interesting edits to movies. For example, removing all mention of Jar Jar Binks from Star Wars E 2 or something. I should sure those hollywood artists would love the idea of an internet full of amateur editors slicing up and dubbing over their movies like contributors to Wikipedia."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.
"I honestly believe saying someone is a smart lawyer is damning with faint praise. The smartest people become engineers and scientists." -SU.
"Yet I still see wisdom in that which Uncle Ted posts." -creek.
