Thread: MoTab Musings

    Default MoTab Musings

I hope I am allowed some vanity in adding this thread to the Foyer. I am loving my time in the choir and may have thoughts from time to time that may be of interest to you all. If not, this will be a way for me to have an outlet since my circle of friends both online and in person is very small. As you are likely aware we had a successful, by all indications, tour in Europe this summer followed by a fun concert with the King's Singers for Pioneer Day. We are currently in the slow part of our year but working on a couple projects that I am not at liberty to disclose along with the weekly conveyor belt that is Music and the Spoken Word.

Recently I attempted to exert some influence among the men, and women if they wanted, of the choir to have a General Conference mustache club. Sadly, nobody would commit to it so there will still be only 5-6 men in the choir with mustaches.

I am happy to share what I can from behind the scenes and pictures from the tour as requested. If noody is interested I may just talk to myself or take it to my ellis island thread. Thanks for reading

Yeah... show us what shenanigans go on after midnight with the Motab in Europe.

i've always thought it would be cool for the choir to "meow" a song. (replace all words with meow).

the harmonies would be pretty cool.

in football, the coach asked each of us to come up with a play, and he'd pick one of them to work into the game plan.
maybe mack is of a similar mind.

Interesting night at choir tonight. It is truly amazing how one extra letter can change an entire song. We were being jr highish, as basses sometimes are and one guy added theletter I refer to above. My juvenile mind applied it to the rest of the song and I was laughing too hard to sing. Enjoy:

On great, lone hills, where tempests brood and gather,
    Primeval Earth, against primeval sky,
We, far(t)ing forth, possessed by fervent longing,
Have found a throne, eternal and high,
Have knelt at last in wordless adoration,
Till fire and whirlwind have both gone by.

With ardent song we greet the golden morning.
By faith upborne, remember not the night.
The whole wide world, triumphant hails the dawning.
God walks abroad in garments of might,
The hills, behold, are now a path of splendor,
Transfigured all, and all crowned with light.

Slight bit of irony today. We honored veterans and the message was about peace so the song right after it was Let There Be Peace on Earth and Let It Begin with Me. The closing song was a salute to the armed forces by singing their various anthems. With Army having precedence, the first words after ending the song "let it begin with me" were "First to fight."

But then as I said to the guy sitting next to me, there is nothing so peaceful as a dead body from the Army's perspective.

I saw three guys with mustaches in the Gigapixel of the inauguration. We'll call them Glasses, Baldy, and Needs "Just for Men". Which one are you?

I cannot remember if I had my glasses on or not for the gigapixel. I am always bald though. They let us keep the scarfs as a momento. Pretty whirlwind trip for us but glad to be able to participate in the ceremony.

Just reviewed it. I am the bald guy. I hadn't put my glasses back on.

So - I happen to know a choir member who tells me that he tried to convince Mack that you should sing "I Have Two Little Hands" at the inauguration - and that he had the support of several other choir members. Any truth to his claims?

I know that there were the same suggestions going around as were circulating on twitter and so forth but I am unaware of any direct communication with Mack and any choir member regarding the repertoire. Nobody ever asked for my input on what we should sing nor did I offer it. I know of one choir member who without the fanfare of a certain former choir member, chose not to volunteer for the trip and intead participate in protests back at the Utah State Capitol. More power to him because that is how it should have been done by the former choir member as well.

I'm sure he was mostly joking - as was I!

I'm also sure that among the group of you, there were all kinds of suggestions as to possible possible songs to sing.

FWIW - his personal perspective was that he didn't vote for Trump, didn't agree with many of the issues he campaigned on, but he is the President. And the inaguration is about the process, the office of the presidency, and a peaceful passage of power in our great nation. Not about any one individual.

That attitude has prevailed throughout the choir both among those that went and whose names were not drawwn from the hat.

Very strange incident at the end of MSW today. We did a patriotic program for President's Day. Just as we finished and went off the air some lady stood up and yelled, "Trump is not my president!" and then stormed out the side door. Really weak for a protest. FYI no mention was made of Trump and in fact the message, that I never listen to but my 8 year old wanted to hear tonight while we watched went out of its way to point out that the soul of America is not in its leaders but its people as a whole.
The guy standing next to me figured she was from Canada or Sweden.

I love Music and the Spoken Word.

I used to have the DVR set to record MSW and TWD on Sunday and since TWD jumped the shark a few seasons ago now it's just MSW and occasionally some soccer that gets recorded on Sunday.

The patriotic programs are my favorites. I especially enjoy singing the songs of the armed forces on Memorial and Veteran's Day programs, although my OCD about goes out of control because they don't have the service flags in correct order of precedent until just before we go live. I am basically worthless for those rehearsals because I am staring at the flags wishing I could go down and fix them.

My three-year-old calls that program "fake church," followed by "people singing songs." Being a dad is awesome.

I knew the Spoken Word guy in college. He was engaged to my wife's cousin (they broke it off). His name was Lloyd and we used to call him Floyd just to bug her. He was pretty cool back then...had longish hair and was edgy. He turned me on to Woody Allen's book Without Feathers. He didn't have a solemn voice back then.

One of LDC's primary teachers reported that they can no longer teach for her because of the MoTab. Copelius your singing at the POTUS innaguratiin drove two people from the church. I wish there was some exaggeration in my post.

Wait, MoTab singing for POTUS caused this person to leave the church?

Sorry Hostile, you may want to turn away right after the invocation on Sunday morning (and Mack didn't arrange it, so All American may not complain who knows). For those counting, Mack arranged 6 of the 12 songs we are doing that are not straight from the hymnbook. Ryan arranged 3.
