Does anyone know of a socialist country whose stock market has outperformed ours over the last 50 years or any time period 10 years or longer you choose?

Remember how Bush was mocked by the democrats and socialists for letting people choose to put money into the stock market?

Go back about 10 years when he made the proposal. During that time in '08 and '09 when the market went down over 40% he got the I told you so treatment.

Well, if someone had got to choose back then and put it all in the S&P $100,000 would be worth about $198,000. In 10 year treasuries the worth is $128,000.

Stuff like this is why I have a tendency to ignore democrats on economics.

There is so much repulsive about Bernie Sanders I don't know where to begin. He's a protectionist, and a nativist; he blames the Mexican immigrants for the physical, economic and spiritual decay of working class whites in America. Why not take a look at their shitty values and the paternalism of politicians like Sanders who have fostered such a self-pitying class of angry folks so ill-equipped for our modern, globalized world? And he proudly proclaims himself a socialist. And he plays to the weaknesses of the most self-entitled young poeple. I could go on and on. He's just a more duplicitous version of Donald Trump.

It is, especially hilarious when you show up to tell everyone what someone else is saying. Your patrons are too stupid to figure it out for themselves???

For the more discerning on the board, they realize I haven't said socialism is bad, I have argued it is economically an inferior system to capitalism. Even crony capitalism.

Even the church with all it's power to direct people and their lives couldn't make pure socialism work.

The people in Canada, the UK, France, Germany, the Norweigan countries and many other countries with socialism are doing OK. I don't think socialism would cause great pain and suffering here in the United States. As a matter of fact, it will probably enhance the self esteem of some long haired guy playing on the California sidewalks for $$.

Apparently there are some who need convincing. Bernie took what, 100% of Utah votes? Cardiac's assessment is that even the Utah democrats would prefer a socialist to a woman. Clearly they Republicans would prefer an aspiring dictator likeTrump to a woman.

I don't get those who fail to remember the past. Socialism has not lifted economies, but sucked off the capitalistic economies and in cases such as Venezuela destroyed what could be successful economies.

Socialism is a gateway drug. I have nothing against Marijauna. If it leads to the use of more harmful drugs, while sad that is the individuals responsibility. Same with socialism, if the people vote to get deeper and deeper into it, they only have themselves to blame when the crap hits the fan.

Just for JL's understanding, as a gateway drug, socialism is not bad IMHO. I just prefer something better.

Socialism doesn't lift society. Societies that have adopted it were already successful. Those which weren't successful didn't become successful after adoption. Is Venezuela, which had enough resources to become successful now successful as a result?

There are other devices to use to ensure good opportunities for members of society other than governmental interventions, but many of these devices are slow and don't prevent all perceived injustices. Socialism is a luxury that some rich societies burden themselves with. I am not advocating in favor of dismantling the existing social nets, but we need to control the growth and expectations for a bigger and more expensive net.

You realize he is for robust (and yes, expensive) social programs and not communism right? We've got our own red scare going on in this thread. Most democracies around the world have parties that are in line with what Bernie wants, and they are not considered extreme parties.
