When I was a kid, my dad had a beard when he was called as a bishop. The stake president at the time didn't care. Then a new stake president was called a few years later and he had a mustache. I think I had bishop at BYU with a beard, that was back in 2003.

But with how rigid we've become even in the last 10 years as far as white shirts go, I wonder if now there's a ton of discouragement against facial hair. I find this kind of stuff totally bizarre. But I also think sometimes the more people push back against something -- like telling BYU administration to give up the beard nonsense -- the more the extreme orthodoxy will push back and figure out justifications or reasons for the nonsense. I'm sure there are quite a few people who became entrenched in the gay marriage debate who had previously not given the issue much thought.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

BYU to reinstate religious exemption to the beard ban.

BYU's own Bagdad Bob .... err .... Carrie Jenkins insists that it has nothing to do with recent protests and media attention, including a feature in the NY Times. Sure, Carrie. Whatever you say.

Does BYU give her some sort of exemption that she can pull out in temple recommend issues, because clearly she'd never be able to answer the "honest in your every day dealings" question with a straight face. Or is it up there with green tea and Mark Grace style alcohol consumption where the discretion is merely noted before moving on to the next question?

I didnt realize that they had eliminated the religious exemption. How strange. What was the rationale there?

IIRC, they believed people were faking religious commitment or something. So they simply eliminated that option. When people complained, Carrie Jenkins pulled out the standard BS response:

The university’s spokeswoman, Ms. Jenkins, said it makes its policy clear to Muslims during the application process. “He would have known all the standards before ever even enrolling in the university,” she said.
    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/18/us...niversity.html

BYU was then in the ironic position of restricting religious freedom.

BYU, Carrie Jenkins, and the ridiculous ban were roasted here:

ha that's really funny in a pathetic sort of way. I wonder if you were to ask each member of the Q12 individually if they are even aware of or endorse many of BYU's silly on-campus shenanigans (monitoring shaving before taking a test or playing intramural basketball, disallowing students from making protest signs, prohibiting Rodin statues from the museum, selling regular diet coke, etc).

Although there are things at BYU I am knock, they do attract top notch people there and I trust even the ones who aren't have top notch people supervising them.

Therefor I am puzzled as to why Carrie and those above her assume it is OK to insult the common sense of those they issue information to.

I have some friends who are hard core LDS and even they scoff at some of the things said from BYU. The no demand for caffeinated drinks and now this one indicates they must believe "good" mormons just accept anything they say and they really don't care what everyone else thinks of them.

Follow-up article in the Provo Daily Herald:

    http://www.heraldextra.com/news/loca...0ba33e68f.html

This tidbit from the end is especially interesting:

But Adam, a senior who asked that his last name be withheld and who has been growing a beard for more than a year and a half without a beard exemption, said he doesn’t have any problems — even in the school’s testing center, where the university's Honor Code is notoriously enforced the most strictly.

“There’s not really a big story. I just don’t shave and nobody seems to care,” Adam said. “It speaks to the fact that this rule was set up at a specific time, and the cultural cues that led to it were a little silly. I get why they did it, but that cultural context around beards has changed significantly over time.

"My experience shows that people just don’t care. And that speaks to the fact that it’s a cultural interpretation of what a beard means.”
This mirrors my son's experience. He would go long stretches without shaving and nobody would even ask about it. Most of the faculty, staff, and students couldn't care less.

My experience was the same with one exception, the guys who run intramurals really care about any 5 o'clock shadow.

Two exceptions: The guys/gals who run intramural sports, and the guys who hand out "issue" for open gym.

Exactly. Both times I had my coveted card, once the full beard was in place, it was almost as if my permission to wear it was assumed. I found it interesting that any time I was representing the University in a performing group, I was required to be clean shaven (mustache still allowed) notwithstanding the beard card. That even carried over to post BYU days when invited to be part of an BYU Choir for Priesthood Session.

I thought I heard somewhere that BYU issue is no longer. If so, everyone who has stolen a BYU Physical Education shirt now has a collectors item.

BYU was much less strict than BYU-Taliban branch-Rexburg.

I am rocking a fierce one right now incidentally. My friend commented that I looked a bit like Osama Bin Laden which pisses me off.

I've always hated shaving. I never had a 'beard' per se, but I usually had some growth. The only time it was a problem at BYU was at the Lee Library. I was trying to check out a book and a student worker wouldn't let me.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

    The beard ban should end.

I think most young men look silly with beards, but I don't want to stand in their way of doing so.

I'm even willing to allow our sweet Hungarian, Romanian, and Turkish sisters to wear their beards.

    I just can't grow a decent one - I keep trying though

I do have a decent mustache though

Problem is they didn't match the beard color to the hair color. The beard clashes. Fix that and you're golden.
