  • Jensie and the hour record

Today Jens voigt tries to break the hour record. The uci has relaxed some of the equipment regulations and is trying to generate interest in the event again. If he succeeds he will need to go over 49 kilometers in an hour.

Eddy Merckx thinks he can do it, sort of, but wants us all to remember that his 72 record involved aerodynamically sloppy equipment. Of course nothing he says about riding is bragging. He is the greatest.

        Excellent. Thanks.

Here's another good article about the record.

        http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/oth...iscipline.html

Jens Voigt is a good guy. I have enjoyed his twitter feed more than almost any other cyclist. At 43 he is retiring from the sport with a bang. The article notes that his bike has several Chuck Norris-isms on it. Such as: "Jens Voigt doesn't usually ride in a velodrome because he doesn't like to lap himself" or simply "I am Motherf----ng Jens Voigt." Here's to the Jensie; good luck!

Voigt has always been one of my favorite riders and next year's peloton won't be the same without him, but I don't think he has a chance today. I hope I'm wrong. But unless there are four Cat 2 climbs in the velodrome, this type of thing doesn't suit his style.

I love that VeloNews published his playlist.
          Warmup:
          • REO Speedwagon “Keep on Loving You”
          • Brian Adams “Summer of 69″
          • Journey “Wheel in the Sky”
          • Air Supply “Making Love out of Nothing at All“
          • Metallica “Turn the Page”
          Hour Record:
          • Republica “Ready to Go”
          • P.O.D. “Feel So Alive”
          • Metallica “One”
          • AC/DC “Hells Bells”
          • AC/DC “Highway to Hell”
          • Farmerboys “Here Comes the Pain”
          • Ugly Kid Joe “Goddam Devil”
          • AC/DC “Thunderstruck”
          • Black Sabbath “Paranoid”
          • Metallica “Frayed Ends of Sanity”
          • Europe “Final Countdown”
          Cooldown:
          • Metallica “Nothing Else Matters”
          • Cranberries “Zombie”
          • Kansas “Dust in the Wind”
          • Air Supply “All Out of Love”

I hope he is using that warm up music to make him mad and fired up because if I had to listen to that crap it would upset me.

That's what makes Jensie such a good twitter feed and a popular guy in the peloton. He is completely comfortable in his own skin, without guile and always genuine. And he does it in about 5 languages.

He is actually looking very good on the bike. Not like Jens Voigt at all. But his average is falling back. I wonder if he went out too fast. He said that he wanted to be well ahead of the record at 30 minutes, and he will be. But can he keep it?

This reminds me that the film The Flying Scotsman, about Graeme Obree's hour record attempts, is very good.

Also, a huge crowd there watching. If he is close at the end I suspect they will help him push through. Figuratively, that is, not literally.
