Perhaps someone on this board, one of the intellectuals perhaps, could tell me why the left in this country are so enamored with the European model.

I have visited Europe 3 times. Nice place to visit with the exception of France in 1965. What I really liked about Europe is how old it seemed. Very layback and non competitive. I felt in any kind of confrontation I would have the upper hand. Especially in France where the men lay their heads on the women's shoulders instead of vice versa.

What is there to envy or want to emulate about Europe?

Well thanks. That certainly answers my question. I think I will use it at the pearly gates. '71, are there reasons to let in you in heaven. Me, "yes plenty".

European models are the best! I haven't seen the stats on liberal vs. conservative taste in models that you reference, but I'm surprised that conservatives aren't into models from Scandinavia/France/Eastern bloc. Also, Iceland has the most models per capita in the world. Lots to like!

If you can't see anything about Europe to emulate than you sir are the ugly American. There, I said it.

Maybe I am just naive, uninformed, uneducated or have a bad attitude.

However, instead of just kindly pointing out a few things worth emulating, you have to stoop to name throwing. I will pass on emulating your tactics only to say I picture you as someone who puts your head on your wifes shoulder instead of vice versa.

I'm not sure there is a European Model per se. There is just too many variables involved to emulate. When I was younger the big bad Scandinavian socialist model was talked about a lot. But that has changed significantly in the past decade. In many ways the Scandinavian countries have a more pro-business model than the US. But what you are referring to is probably in the context of Universal Health Care, not so much an economic model.

There are a lot of things to like about the Europeans. In my mind liking is not necessarily a basis for "modeling" onself after.

You have to like their rich cultural history. However, that is history. You can't emulate that. Kings and pagentry just won't cut it anymore. As I said I do like their lay back attitude. However, someone has to be ambitious, maybe to a fault to make up for the people who have the lay back attitude. Right now that is the US and I would wonder who will take that position if we as a country go to the laid back someone else will take care of me model.

Are their Universities better than ours. I don't think so, but maybe. The Scandanavians do have a lot going for them, but could a Country our size really do what they do?

I don't see it, but if there is something we would be better off following their lead, I would like to hear about it. I am willing to learn. Doesn't harm my fragile ego to admit I hadn't thought of something.

Hillary Clinton compares Vladimir Putin’s actions in Ukraine to Adolf Hitler’s in Nazi Germany

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday compared recent actions by Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Ukraine to those implemented by Adolf Hitler in the late 1930s.

Putin’s desire to protect minority Russians in Ukraine is reminiscent of Hitler’s actions to protect ethnic Germans outside Germany, she said.

Putin has been on a campaign to give Russian passports to anyone who has Russian connections, Clinton said.

The Russian leader has recently done so in the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, which, Clinton said, is similar to what happened in Nazi Germany in the late 1930s. Hitler resettled tens of thousands of ethnic Germans who were living in parts of Europe to Nazi Germany.

Clinton made her comments at a private event benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach.

“Now if this sounds familiar, it’s what Hitler did back in the 30s,” she said. “All the Germans that were ... the ethnic Germans, the Germans by ancestry who were in places like Czechoslovakia and Romania and other places, Hitler kept saying they’re not being treated right. I must go and protect my people and that’s what’s gotten everybody so nervous.”

Last week, Putin put Russian troops on the Ukrainian peninsula in Crimea, insisting that Russia has a right to protect its interests and Russian-speakers in Crimea and elsewhere in Ukraine. However, there has been no sign of ethnic Russians facing attacks in Crimea, where they make up about 60 percent of the population, or elsewhere in Ukraine. The decision followed a new government coming to power last week in Ukraine following months of pro-democracy protests against the now-fugitive president, Viktor Yanukovych, and his decision to turn Ukraine toward Russia instead of the European Union.
