It's an absurd distinction. There are many things protected in the bill of rights that are based on choice, not genetics.

And to flat out state that religions aren’t being discriminated against is to deny history, specifically Mormon history. Mormons have been discriminated against in the past. It’s important to make sure it never happens again.
Yes Mormons have been discriminated against in the past. It is also a long ago past. I support protecting the religious freedom of Mormons. Let's be honest here though, this is entirely about making sure the LDS church gets to continue to engage in discriminatory behavior against homosexuals without any repercussions and advocate for discriminatory laws against homosexuals without repercussions. It just gets packaged as "religious freedom" just like it was packaged as a battle between "marriage equity" and "traditional marriage."

Compare it to those rights. Compare it to the right to free speech. Compare it to rights to vote. Compare it to any number of rights that are not choices. The LDS church doesn't get to speak of the rights of homosexuals in invoking their religious freedom rights when they actively advocated and spent millions of dollars seeking to deny rights to them. I'm sure you would just be hunky dory if an LGBTQ group tried to deny you the right to marry because you are LDS then a few years later when they rightfully lost, talked about how their rights need to be protected just like yours.
The crux of what has traumatized us about CUF/CG is that we thought they were our friends. And their identity as BYU fans turned out to be the most important thing to them. What empty lives! What a damning indictment of the LDS Church!

Funk, you aren't very good at making these arguments.

I used to e-mail with Winston Blackmore for information re: a law review article I helped to write.

It's been a while, but I don't believe that they're FLDS anymore (or if they are, that they follow Warren Jeffs). When we were writing, Jeffs had tried to oust him and several others in BC, but distance and lack of an effective God Squad led to Blackmore being head of the group in Bountiful. They may have mended fences. Winston showed some impressive agility in currying favor with the Utah AG-appointed special fiduciary who was assigned the FLDS assets held in the United Effort Plan Trust.

I will say that he goes on more hunting trips around North America than you'd expect from a man who supports dozens of wives, but that's none of my business.

Maybe there are a lot of widows in British Colombia who need someone to look after them? It's been a few years since every able bodied Canadian man was directed to open his box of faith and assemble at the tree in Edmonton.

Not quite the news, but I'm betting it won't be long before Olivia Moultrie is in the news. 6th grader with a full-ride to UNC for soccer. Currently plays with a boys club and dominates. Try not to hold it against her that her parents are doTerrorists. Nice backyard, tho!

I bet there are way more right-wing nutjobs in the church than socialists.

I do find this conflict interesting. For a long time the Church was fairly isolated and that ecochamber made the real conservative folks comfy. For a long time the Church has made more efforts to engage the world on its terms - to be "in" but not "of." There has been conflicts and acts of entrenchment and different camps within the Church have developed. Living where I live I do get some exposure to the right wing folks. The mentality is interesting and while I must admit some semblance of sympathy for their concerns I just cannot see how efforts to not be "in" are helpful to either the issues of the day or their own kids - who are just so ill-equipped for the "real world." Some might be able to figure out a way to feed themselves without engaging the real world but those opportunities are very few and far between and usually will require some basic grasp of the "real world" to recognize and exploit.

That's a really dumb thing to associate with a temple recommend. Shame on her leaders.

At the same time, she was interviewed on the local news and it sounds like she was itching to be a martyr for the cause. Fully drops her shirt and lets it all hang out. I can totally see how people would be uncomfortable.

Yep. I'd bet money that she leaves the breast that is not being suckled on open display. Otherwise, this wouldn't even be brought to the attention of the leaders.

Agreed %. Everyone is stupid here. This is a why-do-i-care story, like stories about big foot sightings, popsicles melting on a warm day, or any headline about celebrities and Twitter.

Not wearing her Gs in the video. Pulls her shirt all the way down and "never covers" when nursing that kid. Refuses to use the mother's room because you have to walk through the bathroom to get to it.
