I am setting it aside, since all we were getting at was the intellectually lazy practice of dismissing the entire message because of the (perceived or real) bias of the messenger. And that is no way to run a discussion.

But since my sanitized "thesis" seems to raise no hackles, I guess I'm done here.

All biases are sincere. Otherwise they would not be biases. And it is not lazy to question bias, particularly when the message is full of normative evaluations. In fact, it is then essential.

    But, I am done, too.
    PLesa excuse the tpyos.

    So here are my questions:

Why spend the hefty amount? What does this do for the church? The church's money spent should be guided by its 3 oh I mean 4 folded mission (perfect the saints, proclaim the gospel, redeem the dead & Care for the poor and Needy). Under what part of the mission does this 35 million purchase fall? Does this get put in a museum or does this go to storage? Was the high amount done with a wink so when they are ready to sell some land holdings the church has interest in they are on good terms?

Isn't it clear that this is a goodwill measure taken by the church to help out its step sister? There's no way the transcript is worth anywhere near $35MM, so there's an additional motive. I choose to assume that this is a down payment for the Kirtland Temple and a right of first refusal on the COC's parking spaces in Independence during the Second Coming.

It looks like the funds will essentially be applied to the CoC's $115 million(!) unfunded pension liability.

I don't mean this as an intentional jab at the LDS church, but that sort of transparency is pretty refreshing.

I only read a fraction of that debate, but I did catch the part about Mammon and creekster has a point. This is the google definition:

wealth regarded as an evil influence or false object of worship and devotion. It was taken by medieval writers as the name of the devil of covetousness, and revived in this sense by Milton.
It is a loaded term and does not simply refer to money.

I'm actually on Creek's side in that instance. But after his exhaustive reply, I wanted to jerk his chain a little.

We all won then. Have it your way? Btw, I suppose the University of Nike escaped any prosecutions that Universities of Adidas are enjoying? Oops just read your basketball post.

The experience convinced him that Mormons have a lot in common with North Koreans. “When the L.D.S. started, they were hated,” he told me. “They were sent to the desert. But they made it thrive. They are organized like a bee colony, where everyone works for one purpose and they would die for it. And they make huge output, as a result.
