If that is how it is handled, I see little chance that Hildebrandt is paroled from the first sentence after the first year. No way she shows genuine remorse or change. One thing that came out in the sentencing is that in jail house calls, which Hildebrandt knew were being recorded, she blamed the children for what happened. Makes her claims that she "loves" the children actually pretty disgusting.

    Hildebrandt is an evil person.

One thing that is interesting is that there was not much of a deal given to either defendant. The initial charges were 6 counts of 2nd degree felonies. The plea deal was 4 counts at 2nd degree felonies and 2 counts dismissed. No concurrent sentences and the sentencing of 1-15 years is the sentence in Utah for a 2nd degree felony. If either defendant had gone to trial, it would have been 6-90 years. The deal for each really only gave them a possible 2 years knock off of the minimum sentence. Clearly, the state was not going to give much wiggle room in a plea deal, which was appropriate given the gravity of the charges.

I'd like to think her remorse is genuine and that was her motivation. I don't know.

I am certain that Hildebrandt's plea was not about protecting the kids from trial. She said that was her motivation, but it is bullshit.

I just hope that the lawsuits against Hildebrandt come pouring in. Apparently, a cult leader is a good gig and she has the funds available to be paying out to families she has destroyed over the years.

      • It'll be interesting to see how the Board handles the hearing for the first charge. I think they have a matrix they go off of for the most part. Probably rehearing in X years. That number will be telling.

Info coming out about Kevin Franke’s presence, or lack thereof, while his kids were being jacked around by his wife and the Jodi Hildebrandt lady.

First mistake was join Hildebrandts Connexions group. Second mistake was letting Hildebrandt move into his own home with him and his wife:

During that second interview, he said everything changed between him and his wife after Hildebrandt moved in with them. He said Hildebrandt moved to their Springville home after she was unable to stop strange incidences happening at her Ivins house — and that strange things then started happening in his home.
While Hildebrandt lived with them, he said he was forced to follow specific rules and called the situation an "in-home separation" from his wife.

"I could leave when I wanted, but I couldn't come back until Ruby gave me permission. I couldn't come into the kitchen to eat until Ruby gave me permission. And the upstairs where Jodi roamed was completely off-limits. I couldn't go upstairs anymore in my own house," Kevin Franke said.

He told police Hildebrandt was the only person who would let him back into his home if he ever left. Kevin Franke said he felt that if he couldn't win Hildebrandt's approval, he would never be able to get Ruby Franke's approval.

"It felt like an impossible task because no matter what I did, no matter how much I tried to track better or be truthful and not be selfish, every week, it was like, 'You're being manipulative,'" he said.
Dude sounds like a complete pussy and jackwagon. What are the odds that his wife and Jodi were banging each other after Jodi moved in?

I mean, that all sounds terrible, but I'm not sure why you are piling on the husband. His wife basically followed Hildebrandt off a cliff. Short of physical intervention, what would you have him do in that situation?

Also, seems like a stretch/in bad taste to suggest a sexual relationship between Franke and Hildebrandt.

Hildebrandt's power over Ruby seems like it might allow for that, in spite of what Ruby may have thought/believed prior.

I won't argue with that, but I do feel like it would be so far out of the ordinary it might shock Ruby's system. Unless she was into it (but if you've seen Hildebrandt, that theory seems to lose credence).

                    • I haven't followed this case very much, but my sister texted me and was wondering if I'd seen the story on 20/20. I started watching it and the second I saw the interview with the husband, I knew which direction this thing was going. Hildebrandt weaponized the church's stance (some would say hysteria) on puhnography and had driven a wedge between the husband and wife to the extent that he was separated from his wife and even his four youngest kids -- in fact I texted this to my sister before I had even seen a majority of the show.

My brother is a psychiatrist, he's totally active but has been very critical of what he thinks is an obsession the church has re pornography usage. I'll be curious to hear what he has to say about this. I have no experience in the field, but my back of the envelop theory is that the Franke woman was always crazy, + clearly a huge narcissist, but not necessarily psychopathic. By contrast, the Hildebrandt woman was a total psychopath who apparently enjoyed dominating and controlling even to the point of torture. Hildebrandt took advantage of Ruby Franke, either because she saw a target and a way to get control over her and her kids, or maybe she saw financial gain with a Youtube celebrity (having 2 million subscribers is pretty big deal and I believe these people do very well). While they did mention the fact the two teenaged children stayed in Springville while the two youngest were dragged down to the Ivins House of Horrors, the 20/20 show didn't speculate as to why. In my mind, Hildebrandt clearly wanted them there because she knew she wouldn't be able to dominate them to the same extent she could with the two youngest. In fact, the two teenagers would have only prevented Hildebrandt from completely having her way with the two youngest.

Hildebrandt deserves to go to jail for the rest of her life. Like the prosecutor said on 20/20, I also wouldn't let Ruby Franke out until her two youngest children are grown and don't have to depend on her at all.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

                      • A couple things:

                        1. Why doesn't the father have custody of the four youngest kids?

                        2. I'm not blaming the church for this, but it needs to be immediately examine any referrals it's giving and/or any direct relationship it has with therapists that focus on porn "addiction" (when is it an addiction as opposed to a habit?). Take it for what it's worth, but my brother believes strongly that this obsession with this stuff and probably even the therapy itself is doing far more bad than good. In fact, he's said that "characterological" (a word I don't know and had to look up) problems + an assortment of other personal issues that interfere with a relationship is instead being scapgoated into merely a porn addition causing all the problems. To illustrate this point, here are two women starving and torturing children who at the same time are worried about the father's porn habit.

No, the church is not to blame. Therapy offered by competent therapists is doing much more good than harm. Psychiatrists are not therapists, nor should they pretend to be therapists. If you want to read about the the issue there is an excellent book by Robert Weiss, a non LDS educator, author, and licensed clinician for nearly 30 years:

Sex Addiction 101 - A Basic Guide to Healing from Sex, Porn, and Love Addiction

He describes in plain language what is and is not an addiction.

                          • I read much of the journal entries from Ruby Franke. I take back what I said about her not necessarily being a psychopath. They are worse than I could have imagined. I think she needs to stay in jail until her youngest child is well into her 20s, completely independent and can resist all contact with her. What a psychotic, horrible person. Maybe I missed something, but I didn't hear Jodi's niece describe the same degree of physical torment.
