  • I read a bunch of junk food novels recently. Just finished the first Jack Reacher novel, Killing Floor. Liked it a lot. That Reacher dude is a violent guy though.

I am about halfway through the Jack Reacher series on Audible. Jack is a badass.

After reading this book, I was interested in learning a little more about the polygamist communities in southern Utah so I bought a copy of Escape by Carolyn Jessop. Wow. Totally blew me away. No matter how crazy you think things are in the FLDS community, this book will shock you even more. Carolyn was married off to a top FLDS leader (Merrill Jessop - currently serving 12 years in a Texas prison for marrying off his 12-yr-old daughter to Warren Jeffs) by her father when she was 18 years old. He was in his 50's at the time. She was a smart woman and was able to finish college and teach school, but eventually Warren Jeffs came to power and shut down all of the schools and she was forced to trash (others took them away) her entire library of children's books. Things got so unbearable that she escaped with her kids in 2005. This was quite a feat, as some of her kids didn't want to leave (one eventually returned). This is really an outstanding book. Escaping the way she did was high drama and came at a great risk and a great cost. You can't help but cheer her on. At the same time, it is a deeply disturbing book. In some ways the FLDS seem quite foreign and in other ways they are frighteningly familiar. Highly recommended.
I wrote about Escape a few years ago somewhere on here, I think. I agree--it's an eye opening look at that world.

You remember Fascinating Womanhood from the book? Solon has it. It is awesome.

I was tempted to buy a copy on Amazon just out of curiosity.

Read it a few weeks ago as well. Liked it.

Books that I have read in the last little while:

The Fall of Giants - Ken Follett I liked this, though not as much as Pillars of the Earth. Listened to this and have started the next in the trilogy.

Bent Road - Mystery / Suspense (kind of) - for some reason I really liked this book. It just made me uneasy, in a good way. Would recommend, and I totally agree with this as an Edgar Award Finalist.

The Secret Race: Inside the Hidden World of the Tour de France: Doping, Cover-ups, and Winning at All Costs - by Tyler Hamilton This is a must read for you cyclists out there. Holy crap. Gave great insight into doping and racing in general. Warning - you may hate Lance after reading this.

The Scarlet Pimpernel - Don't know if this a classic or not, but it is old and I really liked it. Fast easy read, but fun.

Lets explore Diabetes with Owls - David Sedaris A few places really made me laugh out loud, but overall not s good as some of his other stuff.

The Power of Six - This is the second book in the young adult series, I am Number 4. Easy read, and I recommend to young adults out there. There is a bit of language and mild sexuality, but I had no problems with my 12 yr old reading it. Fun series.

a few that I haven't gotten around to setting my thoughts down formally

                    http://www.amazon.com/Hawk-Quest-Rob...rds=hawk+quest

This novel starts in 1072 and is takes the reader to Norman England, Iceland, Greenland, Norway, the Rivers of Russia ending up in Turkey. The basic plot is that a young Norman Knight is taken prisoner by the Turks after the Battle of Manzkrit (SP) and his family is unable to raise the cash ransom. However as an alternate the Sultan will take 4 rare white Gyrfalcons. This is the story of the search for those falcons and the trek to get them back to Turkey. I thought it was well written with good characters and gave it 4 stars

                    http://www.amazon.com/The-Barbed-Cro...e+barbed+crown

quick, fun, escapist read. This latest Ethan Gage adventure is set in France/England from just prior to Napoleon's coronation to the Battle of Trafalgar. I found this to be better and a whole lot more believable than the last couple of entries in the series - Flashmanesque

And last but not least some mediveal mysteries

                    http://www.amazon.com/Murder-Book-Ma...er+by+the+book

#18 in the Matthew Bartholomew mystery series set in 14th century Cambridge. The main protagonist is a medical doctor and faculty member. This mystery is set against the backdrop of the University opening a common library for all of the colleges and students to use. The faculty is split on the advisability of the library and bodies start popping up in the new library's fish pond. Again I found this better than the last couple of the series

the latest Roger Chapman mystery - set in 15th century England

                    http://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Wass...istmas+wassail

                    again a fun, quick read

                    http://www.amazon.com/Crowners-Crusa...s=crowner+john

a prequel to the Crowner John msytery series set in 12th century Dartmoor. This shows how Sir John become the Corneror of Dartmoor and introduces the main characters of the series

again a fun quick read - I thought the mystery was a little week, but it was fun to learn some of the backstory of the series.

                        http://www.amazon.com/The-Conquerors...the+conquerors

This the story of Pontiacs War. The author uses what he calls Narrative History. While every character actually lived and every event happened, the book is written as novel.
