Ha. You just described most of SF.

Winner- All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

an imaginative and intricate novel inspired by the horrors of World War II and written in short, elegant chapters that explore human nature and the contradictory power of technology.
Started this last Thu on the plane and finished yesterday. Incredible. Makes everything else I've read in the last year or so seem like trash in comparison. The final chapter hit me like a ton of bricks.

Still one of my favorites, and most recommended. I've re-listened to it a time or two when I run out of Audible credits.

Would All the Light We Cannot See be appropriate for younger readers - 12 or 15 years old?

I seem to remember one character with a particular affinity for the f word. He is not a main character, but he does appear a handful of times throughout the book.

Are we talking like 5 f-bombs, or closer to 500?

Currently reading Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World by Anand Giridharadas.

He had appeared in several YouTube videos, as Ted Talks, guests on various late night and talks shows, and in some political discussions. I mostly agree with what he had to say, but he kept referring to his book. I checked the ebooks at my local library and it was available, so I grabbed it. He has an interesting take on how to fix the world. But you can get most of the details from any of the YouTube videos he's in that are just over an hour in length, because he seems to have a standard presentation.

But it's worth reading the additional details if you're interested in his philosophy, even if you disagree with it.

Probably close to 5. I don’t think they even would have registered with me, but when I read it I was considering the book for my then-12-year-old, so I was on high alert for that stuff.

Oh, and I think there’s a rape scene, though it’s not particularly graphic.

Dude you are 5 years late to the party! Definitely one of my faves.

I read this one years ago, about 6 months after my wife read it. I liked it so much I was honestly kind of ticked at my wife, “Why didn’t you tell me I HAVE TO read this book immediately?!”

Wasn’t there supposed to be a big screen version?
