Default One of the good things about facebook...

I came across this link, which took me to a site on the Time site. It has daguerreotypes of 13 men who were veterans of the Revolutionary War, beneath each is a little history of who the man was and what his role in the war was. Learning a bit about each of those men made me realize that I really did nothing of significance as a teenager. I realize that what they did as teens made it possible for me to not have to do anything important as a teen, but that doesn't assuage my thoughts that I accomplished absolutely nothing.

I only wish I had found this before today, but I guess it's still somewhat Independence Day weekend. Very, very cool.

The Internal Revenue Service delivered a notice of deficiency to the social media giant Wednesday for $3 billion to $5 billion, plus interest and penalties, based on the agency’s audit of Facebook’s transfer pricing, the company said in a regulatory filing Thursday. Facebook, which plans to challenge the notice in federal tax court, said its balance sheet could suffer if it’s held liable.

Yes, but not complicated in that FB just didn't pay billions upon billions in taxes. There's an interpretation here that is wrong eihter on the IRS side or on the FB side.

Peter Thiel really did give a nice convention speech. I enjoyed it.

Facebook is still better than Marlboro...

Americans say Facebook is worse for society than Walmart or McDonald's

Walmart and McDonald's may have negative effects on society, according to a new survey of 2,000 Americans, but Facebook beats them both.

Conducted by the research company Honest Data, the survey asked people to single out from a list of companies which ones they felt had the worst impacts on society. The companies included Marlboro, Walmart, Facebook, McDonald's, and Coca-Cola.

Facebook fit that criteria for 27% of respondents, coming in second behind Marlboro, which 43% of people said had negative effects. McDonald's and Walmart came in at 21% and 18%, respectively, while 36% of people said "None of the above."

Facebook stock drops after reports of FTC probe and UK summons of Zuckerberg in data scandal

    • The probes follow a weekend of turmoil for Facebook after reports that Cambridge Analytica gained access to the data of more than 50 million users.
    • Shares of Facebook fell as much as 5 percent Tuesday, after falling as much as 8 percent on Monday.
    • UK officials are also investigating the alleged mishandling of data.

The Federal Trade Commission is investigating whether the use of personal data from 50 million Facebook users by Cambridge Analytica violated a consent decree the tech company signed with the agency in 2011, Bloomberg reported Monday.

The probe follows a weekend of turmoil for the social media giant. Reports this weekend said the research firm improperly gained access to the data of more than 50 million Facebook users.

"We are aware of the issues that have been raised but cannot comment on whether we are investigating. We take any allegations of violations of our consent decrees very seriously as we did in 2012 in a privacy case involving Google," a spokesman for the FTC said Tuesday.

Facebook said Tuesday it expected to receive a letter from the FTC with questions, but has not been informed of a formal probe.

A violation of the consent decree could carry a penalty of $40,000 per violation, which could mean a fine conservatively estimated to be "many millions of dollars in fines" for Facebook, The Washington Post reported over the weekend, citing a former FTC official.

$19 billion doesn't get you much these days...

Brian Acton, the WhatsApp co-founder who Mark Zuckerberg helped make a billionaire, urges everyone to DELETE their Facebook profile - but it will take 90 days to wipe

    • WhatsApp founder Brian Acton tweeted: 'It is time. #deletefacebook'
    • Hashtag trended amid outrage over links to data firm Cambridge Analytica
    • Acton sold the app to Facebook for $19 billion (£11.4 billion) in 2014
    • Acton was at WhatsApp for several years before leaving to start the Signal Foundation earlier this year

Mark Zuckerberg may have helped make him a billionaire, but that hasn't stopped Brian Acton from turning against Facebook.

The co-founder of Whatsapp has taken to Twitter to urge everyone to delete their Facebook profiles tweeting: 'It is time. #deletefacebook'.

It takes 90 days for a user's data to be wiped from the site after deleting it.

The hashtag has been trending amid outrage over Facebook's links to controversial data firm Cambridge Analytica and its handling of personal data.

That's an old case. Nothing to see here... move on:

California Federal Judge Grants Summary Judgment to Apple, Dismissing Consumers' iPhone App Class Action

On November 25, 2013, Judge Lucy Koh of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California granted summary judgment for defendant Apple, Inc., dismissing claims by a class of plaintiffs claiming that they had detrimentally relied on Apple's misrepresentations to purchase and use their iPhones and other devices in violation of California consumer protection laws.1 After nearly three years of litigation, Judge Koh ultimately determined that the plaintiffs lacked standing to pursue their claims because they did not establish a genuine issue of material fact that they "actually relied" on Apple's statements that it had adhered to the company privacy policy.2

His feet are still flat on the ground. Seems like its just a low seat.

Also, that Ted Cruz questioning seemed pretty pointless.

I guess you missed the point that Suckerberg admitted to censoring a certain type of speech, making it a non-neutral platform, which may imply that Facebook may not be entitled to immunity under the law... Oh well, Facebook sucked anyway.

Yeah, I did miss that, because I'm pretty sure he didn't say any of that.
