  • Occupy Chick-Fil-A

So, is it normal for people to set up a tent city 2 days before a Chick-Fil-A grand opening? I know you get one free meal a week per year if you're one of the first 100 people, but do Utahns go more crazy for this kind of stuff than people throughout the rest of the country?

There were literally 50-60 tents outside this Chick-Fil-A yesterday and I don't even know when these people first started setting up camp.

Was there an extremely high percentage of overweight females in this crowd? Why yes there was.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

My brother and some of his buddies did this when he was in HS. They got a lot more than just 1 meal a week. They got a bunch of other free stuff including a couple coupons for free party platters. That was awesome. We used those for a few football games. But to answer your question. Yes it is normal and kind of a tradition for new Chick-fil-a store openings. And no, it's not confined to Utah. If I could own a franchise it'd be Chick-fil-a. No Sunday work and there is a line around the building any time of the day here. They are packed from open to close here in VA.

Chick Fil A has an interesting business model. I've heard it only costs 5k to get the franchise, but after that you have to surrender 50% of the net to the parent company.

I still think you could easily make a fortune. They are busy all day long.

They're doing it in New Jersey and California too.

Somehow they also have the friendliest, most customer-oriented employees I've ever seen at a fast food place. I admire that about the chain.

In N Out is interesting in that they don't franchise at all. They also have tended to expand very slowly along geographic lines. They broke from that to a certain extent by moving into Dallas within the past couple years. They opened up a new plant in Texas to support the expansion. I wonder how Texans are liking In N Out.

Yeah, the business model changed a bit when the original owners died. Their children are expanding it. Fortunately, I haven't sensed a difference in quality or service, so good for them.

Grandchild, not children. Apparently, both children of the original owners died prematurely and the original owner (the wife) came back, but she died several years ago. The only living heir was a granddaughter who was around 25 at the time. She's 30 now and owns 50% of the business with the rest held in a trust. She'll get the remainder when she's 35.

                  Normal? Debatable. Common? Very.

Cow appreciation day today. Wear something cow-like and get a free entrée. I put on a black shirt and went as a Black Angus. Good enough.

Regarding camping out to be one of the first hundred at a grand opening, I knew several people in Pleasanton California that did that. One young mother with six kids who had camped out showed up last year at cow appreciation day with everybody wearing cow spots and stuff. They ordered seven things that were different from the #1 meal, just to find out what the other things on the menu were like.

As I was pulling I to the CFA location on Eagle for lunch, I had to stop and wait for a cow with her calves to cross the parking lot. While waiting in the drive-through, I saw several elaborate cow costumes. Some people really get into this.

It seemed like a great family activity to have the kids make cow costumes out of white garbage bags that they've drawn black spots on, and white paper plates that they've turned in to cow masks.

It was the Chick-Fil-A on Eagle that my wife and I went to. Lots of families there. Half a dozen missionaries were there too, some with cow stuff, some without. They said it was their P-Day.

My family always does the cow day thing. My Mom, sisters and sisters-in-law - along with anyone else not working or not in school - puts on some spots or a mask and goes to get their free chick fil a sandwhich.

I was in Atlanta yesterday for Cow day - the home of the Chick's headquarters and first restaurant. Had lunch at the Chick attached to the college football HOF - and there wasn't one soul that I saw sporting cow costumes. Not one. Really not even anything identifying it as an important day in the Chick's history. Weird.

I got a free meal without the costume - or at least it will be free once I turn in my reimbursement.

Perhaps I'm easily impressed, but this Popeye's chicken sandwich thing is a stroke of marketing genius. Claim it's better than the most popular product out there, have a few social media influencers try the sandwich and back up the claim, and boom. Instant lines out the door. Apparently the drive thru at the Popeye's nearest my house had a line 30 cars deep yesterday, and the cars were spilling out into the main roadway blocking traffic. A quick google search reveals that this was happening all over the place, and the sandwich is now sold out in many places.
